An Formula One riddle, any takers?

This is my first attempt in making a riddle, constructive criticism would always be welcome.

"Snowman from the north, Mass denied,

Midway, Pedro did but Ricardo failed,

Further down, Bernie liked this Pace,

Far south, ending fifth in just one race,

What's common for all of us?"

Update:

Great work Rosbif, you are almost there. However racing death is not the pattern, it was just a coincidence. Pace died in an air accident. Far south indeed refers to the South American tip. And it is not of F1 racers from the Americas either, too easy for someone like you...

There is something else that binds them still in F1.

Update 2:

On second thoughts the fourth line would have been better off if it read "From far south, ending fifth in his only race,"

Update 3:

I should have done more homework on these coincidental similarities. No sir, Italian hardware was not the intended pattern. Though you have every right to put it forward as an answer, and valid too.

Update 4:

You got it Rosbif. Was wondering why no one was pitching in.

Update 5:

This is what happens when I read your quizzes and Dan Brown in the same timeframe, Rosbif.

They all died in motor racing accidents if it's

    GIlles Villeneuve

    the Rodriguez brothers

    Carlos Pace

    Manfred Winkelhock

I didn't actually get the clue "Far south" (unless I was looking for a driver from Argentina or Chile and the extra clue was that they are all from the Americas), but Winkelhock fits with being killed and only finishing 5th once. Bobby Ball and Walt Hansgen also fit and are also from the Americas.

    EDIT

That will be Oscar Galvez then. I found him in my original search but I was fixated on the killed in an accident thing. Don't know why I put Pace down as dying in a car.

One link is that they all used an Italian engine at some point in their F1 careers.

    EDIT 2

They all have a circuit which has been used for F1 named after them: Montreal, Mexico City, Interlagos and Buenos Aires.

    EDIT 3

Glad I got it, it's taken a while. It's like a poetic version of my quizzes where all the answers lead to another answer. It's 11am on Monday in Europe, 10am in the UK and the Americans are still asleep, which probably explains the lack of activity!
