What geographic feature do the 5 largest U.S. West Coast cities have in common?

Although fault lines are correct, they are not the answer I am looking for.

Hint: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose and San Diego all are adjacent to at least one.

Here's a big hint: Elliott, Portage, San Francisco, Santa Monica, San Pedro, San Diego

This is try #5 and so far no one has gotten it right.

Update:

Finally!

Someone got it right.

Update 2:

To all of those who did not say bays, I suggest that you read the second hint I gave, as they are all the names of bays these cities are adjacent to.

I think it is that they are all by or in mountains. Like the Cascades go throughout Oregon and Washington. And also the Sierra Nevada Ranges in California.
