Is it illegal for a restaurant to make their servers pay the bills of customers who leave without paying?

My daughter works for a national chain restaurant, and there have been a few occasions when her customers would "eat and run". She is forced to pay the bill herself. Someone mentioned to me today that this is illegal and I was wondering if anybody had any facts about this being true. Would appreciate any help!

Well, it certainly doesn't sound right, and quite frankly totally unfair to your daughter!! Not to sound mean or offend any of the other Yahoo members, but I probably wouldn’t rely on anyone’s answers here. You should probably consult with a lawyer if you haven’t already. When I had a legal problem, I used quicklegalanswer.com. It was fast and cheap. I’m sure someone over there can help you with your issue. Anywho, best of luck!! Hope I helped!!

Unless your daughter signed a paper stating that she agrees to pay if people skip and run it is ILLEGAL.. You also need to be sure that the money is actually being taken out for that and NOT for her own meals

( She doesn't eat for free ) or that of friends...

Go to the labor board if this is really happening as it is ILLEGAL
