What's your favorite first line?

Just an idle curiosity. Have you ever been struck by the first line or first few lines of a book? I'd like to hear what books (if any) grabbed you by the neck and drew you in in the first line.

I'll start with my favorite:

"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it" C.S. Lewis, Voyage of the Dawn Treader

"As I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home."--The Outsiders

I love that book =] Seriously was the first thing that popped into my mind. And probably the only direct quote from a book that I know by heart!

  • "This is a story about something that happened long ago when your grandfather was a child." C.S. Lewis, The Magician's Nephew

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen." 1984 by George Orwell. Just seeing that makes me want to read it again right now. It was enough to intrigue me the first time around and its just timeless.

"It was the night before Christmas when all through the house..."

Source(s): Actually, if you could believe it, this was the first line to come to my head. From that, I must assume that it's my favourite first line, as it's the only one I can remember by heart.
