Get a cheap airline ticket to Anchorage, with a stop in Sitka, Alaska's first capital. While in Sitka, walk the beach in Sitka National Historical Park and see the old battlefield where Chief Katlian fought off the Russians with a blacksmith's hammer. Visit the tribal house and learn about Tlingit culture. See the Russian Orthodox Cathedral. If you like to hike, there are trails that you can reach from downtown. Take a boat trip sightseeing out into Sitka Sound and see whales and sea otters. (if you get motion sickness, bring medicine for that, just in case) Get some fishing gear (kid need licenses at age 16) and let your son fish off the dock, or pay for a charter fishing trip/cruise around Sitka Sound. You don't need to have a car to enjoy Sitka. You can walk wherever you want to go, or take a cheap taxi. There is a July 4 parade and fireworks, too.

When you get to Anchorage, rent a car and drive to Denali National Park. If your son likes to fish, you can bring some gear and let him try some of the rivers in the Wasilla and Talkeetna areas. The Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Anchorage can give you information over the internet or phone, so you can plan ahead. In Denali National Park, take the park bus (which you have to reserve ahead of time) as far as the Eielson Visitor Center. Bring your own food, a camera, binoculars and a warm jacket. If the weather is clear, you will see Mt. McKinley. If the weather is cloudy, by going that far you should still see some animals, and some beautiful scenery.

If you have time, you can continue on to Fairbanks. If you don't have time, you can return to Anchorage. If you don't want to drive, there is a train (the Alaska Railroad) between Anchorage, Denali Park and Fairbanks.

If you don't make the Sitka stop, or have extra time, you can also drive to Seward from Anchorage. Seward has a nice Marine Life Center and charter fishing and a glacier that you can look at.

You can save money if you camp out and make some of your own food, such as carrying bread and peanut butter for sandwiches. If you want to stay in hotels, look for the smaller hotels, and also look on Priceline, etc. for deals at the larger ones.

Have fun! Alaska is great in July!

Take a look at the Lonely Planet guide to Alaska. You can also contact the visitor's bureaus in any community for brochures. Check out this web site:http://www.travelalaska.com/

Alaska would be very fun to take your son in July! Me and my family did it in June and it was one of the best experiences for my family!

Also it is really cool to see the 24/7 sun, but since its in July it won't be that sunny all night.
