Where was the umbilical cord when I had my miscarriage?

I was 15 and a half weeks pregnant when I miscarried..... And I am just a bit confused on where the umbilical cord was and why it wasn't connected to the baby... I realize this may be a dumb question but I am just confused

Update:

Thank You everybody! And the umbilical cord was connected when I went in the hospital the day before the miscarriage! I had an ultrasound and it was connected and everything was fine! I even have a picture of the baby an the umbilical cord connected... They said my baby was fine but I had a short cervix and they told me I'd need a cerclage (spellin?) But they didn't put it in that day.... Which is why I am so mad now because POSSIBLY my baby would be ok now an I would be 20 weeks:( this has been the worst experience of my life but I am grateful I at least had the ultrasound to get pictures before this happened because its all I have left

I have had 2 miscarriages at 14-15 weeks along, both "missed miscarriages" meaning that there were no signs of it, just went for ultrasound and no heartbeat:( It is completely and totally devastating and I don't wish it upon anybody! It is such a feeling of loss and emptiness....As far as the umbilica cord, well I never saw my babies, by choice. It seems to me at that far along there should of been an umbilica cord, maybe that was the cause of it....I would ask the Doctor for sure! Honey I want you to know you are not alone in this, and I completely understand the impact this has, there are no words for it. I am so very sorry for your loss, and I truly mean that. I hate hearing these stories, but I feel compelled to share my experience, because I know how alone you can feel, and it's even more difficult in the second trimester, because thats when you feel like everything is going to be ok:( Sorry again, and just take it a day at a time
