Republicans: When Ken Starr says he wants to "Keep the definition of marriage as when the US was founded?

Does he not realize that, from the time this country was founded until 1967, the definition of marriage was

"A union between a man and woman of the same race"

??

The definition of marriage that is being touted

"A union between a man and a woman"

Is only 42 years old. Compared to the 191 years of the previous one, I fail to see how it is the "traditional" definition of marriage.

So why won't he be clear on what he wants? He claims to want to go back to the morals this country was founded on. Well, this country was founded on the moral value that says people of the different races cannot marry. Is that the morals he wants to go back to? If not, isn't he lying?

I am sick of these conservatives and their asinine arguments about marriage. Let two consenting adults marry if they want and enjoy the same benefits, no matter race, color, or GENDER!

Nice point. Maybe he's deliberately ignoring the true history of marriage in this country. That wouldn't exactly be a surprise given his political leanings. It's not much different than the righties always saying that marriage isn't a civil right when our Supreme Court declared it a civil right in the 1960's. They ignore the truth if it doesn't support their position.

    EDIT:

just a guy with an opinion:

Are you kidding? His citing of this history is NOT unsupported. You better look up Loving vs. Virginia. They put people in the South in jail for daring to marry outside of their race. That's exactly how marriage came to be declared a civil right by the Supremes.

Ken Starr and anyone who thinks this country is a "Christian" country simply hasn't a clue and obviously should be ignored. Any pair of consenting adults regardless of race or gender should be allowed to marry. As far as I'm concerned triads or small groups should be allowed to marry, too!

damn - another redefinition of marriage? when will it ever end? it is so evil that so many loving couples want to show how much they love each other by marrying for life!!!

maybe it would be better to get all biblical and stone him or do what some want and burn him at the stake or something?

Is he planning on using that to impeach Obama now? Since Obama had a white mother?

  • No, that is obviously not what he meant. No one anywhere is arguing over interracial marriage.

The custom of a dowry may have been common then, also, but I think it would be disingenuous in the extreme to argue that Starr was advocating dowries.

And your historical assertion is unsupported.

ahhh, just like a politician to speak before he does any research. he'd probably like the work force (a.k.a. slavery) the country was founded on, also. maybe drowning witches, too.

Ken Starr is not an elected politician he is a private citizen who represents no one's view other than his own.

The race factor was not established in the constitution as African American marriage was a non issue for the forefathers. I think your trying to play a race card.

  • He is a Politician so of course he knows nothing about the Constitution. Just like Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the other idiot loons we call Congress.
