what do you think of police brutality and racism by the police?

Hi, I’m a student doing my last year of my degree in Public Service Management and I’m doing my dissertation project around the question ‘to what extent does the media influence the public view of discrimination by the police force’. Im focusing on racism and police brutality and media. All peoples thoughts and opinions are appreciated. If you could take 5 minutes out of your time to fill in my questions and send them back to me would be very appreciated and helpful for my work.

1. What do you define as racism?

2. Do you think racism is a problem within the UK, explain your answer?

3. Do you think there is racism in the police, explain your answer?

4. Why do you think the media cover incidents surrounding the Police?

5. Do you think the media are a good resource for news, explain your answer?

6. What do you think is in for the media to maybe lie and twist the truth in stories?

7. What would you define police brutality as?

8. Do you think reason like self defence can be mistake for police brutality, explain your reason?

9. Do you think police brutality is indeed a problem? If yes what do you think should be done to cut incidents down?

10. Is there anything else you would like to add about either racism, media or police brutality?

    1. What do you define as racism? Strong generalization and dislike for a certain race.

    2. Do you think racism is a problem within the UK, explain your answer? I have no clue about the UK

    3. Do you think there is racism in the police, explain your answer? Definitely, there is racism with any kind of person, police or not.

    4. Why do you think the media cover incidents surrounding the Police?

Because the police are expected to be the good guys that are to protect us from the bad guys and treat people justly and fairly. Anything behavior outside of this ideal makes people mad.

    5. Do you think the media are a good resource for news, explain your answer?

Yes and no. They're really all we've got to go on, but they can definitely be biased and exxagerate.

    6. What do you think is in for the media to maybe lie and twist the truth in stories?

What do I think is in it for them? So that they make a story look more exciting or attractive and gain viewers.

    7. What would you define police brutality as?

Using unwarranted and excessive force. If someone is unarmed and not threatening, it would be brutal to beat that person up.

    8. Do you think reason like self defence can be mistake for police brutality, explain your reason?

I think if the policeman genuinely suspects a threat in a situation and is able to explain why he perceived this, it is not brutality to defend himself. It can be mistaken for brutality if the public is not aware of why the police perceived a threat.

    9. Do you think police brutality is indeed a problem? If yes what do you think should be done to cut incidents down?

I think it is because sometimes cops think they are above the law. I guess cops are trained to work together, not to be whistle blowers amongst themselves, so maybe there should be some way that a policeman with a conscious can feel more safe with calling out another cop's inappropriate behavior.

    10. Is there anything else you would like to add about either racism, media or police brutality?

I wonder if the same cops that are brutal to one race are equally brutal to another race, such as their own, and it is called racism, when it's really just brutallity across the board.

    1. Judging someone by only the color of their skin. Can go many ways. There are just as many racist blacks as there are whites.

    2. Never been to the UK.

    3. Yes, but good officers don't let there personal views affect the way they do their jobs.

    4. Ratings.

    5. No. True story: We had an officer respond to a call of someone firing their gun in the middle of an apartment complex. The two officers that arrived found the individual riding away on a bicycle with a gun in his waistband. They attempted to stop him and the individual pulled out the gun and shot at the officers. He missed. The officers returned fire and they did not miss, hitting him several times. Turns out the guy was 17 years old, legally a minor. The headline in the news read: "Police shoot Juvenile while riding Bike." They made it sound as if the officers werejust riding around picking off kids on their bicycles.

    6. Again, ratings.

    7. Using force when it is no longer necessary.

    8. Yes, because the average observer usually has not been in a physical altercation or had to try to take a person into custody who does not want to be taken into custody. If a person attacks me, I am going to respond swiftly and violently.

    9. Overall no. But the uneducated public may have a different perception.

    10. No, I think the 9 other questions covered it.

    1) The hatred of one person by another -- or the belief that another person is less than human -- because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person.

    2) Yes there is a definite clash between the natives and muslims(I personally believe if the muslims are not happy they always have the option of going home)

    3) There is simply because there is racism in humans so some of them are bound to be officers.

    4) It improves their ratings and the cops are supposed to be held to a higher standard than everyone else so it is really disturbing to hear when they have done wrong.

    5) So long as they are unbiased. Some new stations put in their opinion when they should only give facts.

    6) Improved ratings.

    7) Unnecessary beatings or foul treatment.

    8) It is possible depending on how extensive the damage is. But the ones caught on tape are pretty undeniable...

    9) Yes it is in some areas. Equip all cop cars with cameras this way they realize they can be viewed and should they need to it could prove their innocence.

    10) Racism will never end it is part of human nature(no matter how repulsive). The media should always be taken with a grain of salt(I look at many news sources and read many to get a more accurate picture...even those that I do not usually agree with). Police brutality is not nearly as bad as it used to be, but there needs to be zero incidents no one should be beaten .

    1. A specific race being harmed by one or more people.

    2. Yes, Racism is everywhere.

    3. Yes. I am a Peace Officer and it happens alot.

    4. You never hear anything bad about the police. Just the bad people they catch. So when they do something like brutality it puts a big spotlight on them. They are supposed to be the one's protecting us.

    5. They are because they can be everywhere, where as we cannot.

    6. Ratings!!!

    7. Excessive force. As in they have already apprehended an individual, and just so happens the individual pisses them off, and they beat him.

    8. Yes. Most media have never been put in a situation like police officers have.

    9. No. Gangs are then bigger problems. (Personal Opinion)

    10. I would like to say that for those people who have never been put in the situation of chasing down a bad guy, or apprehending an individual it is scary sometimes. Just for the fact that you don't know what that person is thinking about doing. Police officers put there lives on the line everyday to put the scum away on the streets. There seems to be a camera right there anytime they need to use force to control a suspect. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

I forgot who said it, "But absolute power corrupts absolutely!" When you add in all possibilities in and of human frailties, corruption will necessarily run rampant. Give an ****** a badge and a gun, and you give him/her the license to whatever the hell they please. That's not to say all cops are bad or corrupt, but it is to say, if they lean in that direction, we've given them the means to exploit their bent.
