Why can't medicine sit in the sun?

Why does it say on my medicine to avoid direct sunlight. My medicine has been sitting in its bottle on the window sill getting hit with the sun, why is that bad? Its an herbal cough.sorethroat medicine by the way.

Well certain drugs can degrade when they interact with UV light which is why sometimes it says that.

Josh is correct. Ultraviolet light degrades certain chemicals, especially many of those found in drugs. The dark bottles are supposed to filter out the harmful rays, but with the expense of medicine these days, storing them in a dark closet is even better.

Perhaps you see what sunlight does to your furniture, your carpets, your upholstery. Same with other chemicals.

You are the one that is supposed to be avoiding sunlight while you take it not the medicine itself.
