Why must we have English translations for the names of countries?
Okay...so I guess I didn't phrase that question very well! I'm just wondering - why do we call it 'Germany' when its really 'Deutschland'? Why do we say 'Italy' when its really 'Italia'? I understand sometimes it will be down to dialects and accents, but I still think the 'Deutschland' to Germany translation is pretty weird.

All languages have their own "name" for the other countries. English speakers call things by their "English" name. But English countries have names that aren't English too, used by countries who use that language. For example the French call the UK, Australia, The US different names.
I remember having to learn "French" countries in school...
L’Angleterre being England in French.
Les Etats-Unis (d'Amérique) being the United States (of America)
