What age is my Parakeet when she is an adult?

Parakeets become adults around 8 months of age. You can tell a parakeet's age by it's cap feathers on its head, its eyes, and its cere. You can also get an idea of age if your parakeet has a leg band. Different color leg bands represent different years.

The baby parakeet starts out with bars on its head, then the bars go further back on its head as it ages. The baby parakeet's eyes start out all black, then you start seeing the iris over time. By 8 months of age, the iris is very obvious. The cere starts out a translucent pink with a hint of purple in baby parakeets. Female baby parakeets start out with opaque white ceres with a possible tint of blue. The adult male will have a bright blue cere. Adult females will have tan, whitish or pale blue, or brown ceres.

As for breeding, it's best not to start breeding parakeets until about one year of age.

A budgie is a mature adult and normally ready to breed at the age of 12 months. Breeding any sooner will cause all kinds of health concerns for both the parents and the chicks.

Budgies are NOT old enough to breed at 6 months as someone has said. A budgie is still growing and continuing to grow at that age. They are ready to breed safely at 12 months no sooner.

Any attempt to breed sooner results in stunted growth for the parent ( who is still using calcium to form their own bones ) and stunted growth or sickly babies if bred too soon.

It is irresponsible to breed a budgie just based on the colour of its cere and colour change on the cere can come with its first moult at around 3-5 months.

You dont make baby budgies with baby parents. To breed under 12 months is sheer stupidity and very irresponsible.

Parakeets grow up very quickly, by the time they are 6 months they are able to breed and have babies of their own so they become adults at about the age of 6 months. Since you have a female you can tell when she is in breeding mode by her cere (top of the beak) when it turns brown.
