MRI Scan what is the chalky drink for?

My friend is having an MRI Scan and i've had one on my knee but didnt drink anything before it. I know she had to drink a chalky substance before she had hers and know that she has been operated on to have some lumps removed i'm just wondering if this drink is to do with that.

Im worried about her so please let me know if you have had any esperience with this.

Probably a 'barium meal' – a preparation which contains barium salts. It's not for an MRI but for scanning the stomach and intestines; the barium salts work through the intestines as the preparation is digested, and then show up on radiographic images (x-rays).

The oral contrast used for CT studies is barium sulfate (sometimes flavored with something to make it easier to drink). If this is a CT then I would say it's almost certainly oral contrast that's used to opacify the bowels.

If it's truly an MRI that she's having, it may be gadolinium chelate or manganese-based agent used similarly for oral contrast but I've no experience with this sort of thing.

If they are taking images of her stomach, they give her a drink to make her intestines/stomach glow on the MRI so they can see where they are.

Since yours was of your knee, you had no need for illuminating your digestive tract and did not get the drink.
