Time for a new Computer or not?
I have p4 hp that is about 6 years old. It is starting to give me major head pain! I ran the virus and spyware programs and defraged it still seems like it wants walk instead of run. I know that it probably could use another hard drive and more memory. Then what else. Should I just get another computer and put this one out of it's misery. My wife says no. That is because she is the one who opened the wrong e-mail that started this whole mess. The virus is gone but so is the speed .

depends on how much ram you have and how much ram that your system board supports. Also depends on whether or not you have the Windows CD. If you have the CD, then you can wipe it and start over with a clean operating system. That in itself will speed it up. There are several ways to hop up your current PC, but the maximum supported ram is the fastest, easiest, cheapest. Download Everest and it will tell you everything about your computer. Once you find out how much ram is supported, and what type, you can max it out.
If you haven't cleaned the dust out, now would be a good time. Buy a can of compressed air when you visit the computer shop.

With it being 6 years old, and also being an HP it may be time for an upgrade. But before you do that you can restore the speed of your computer by backing up your documents onto Disks (or an external hard drive) and use the system recovery, to wipe out windows and put it back on. A clean install of windows will perform much better.

You are about 3 generations into obsolescence with that machine. Windows is about to launch a new version, but I wouldn't wait for that to blossom. Circuit City just died, and other big box stores are wobbling. It's time to deal.
While you are at it get an external hard drive to back up your data. You can never be completely protected from threats.
Tell your wife that she can have the antique. It's not too late to establish separate checking accounts and each contribute to common expenses according to your respective incomes.
A computer is a power tool; you should either be able to buy it out of your own pocket or go without.
Option B: Nuke and pave. Move all data to a backup system, and restore the original factory setup. Reinstall everything.

The best way is to reinstall the OS and start anew.
It's not really worth upgrading a computer that's 6 years old. Mainly because old parts are hard to find, and because of that they actually cost more.

My friend, already time you change your computer, 'cause tecnology is changing full time. If possible change the most advanced computer, e.g.: Duo Core or Quad Core. Ok, Good Luck for you!

reinstall the operating system with xp home as it takes very little resources. It will be fine as long you dont do anything really intensive. on the system and it will run smoothly again :)
