Ok.
The pet stores don't really know much about bettas.
They really need at least 2 gallons, bowl or tank, bigger is better.
You will also need a filter and a heater.
Here is the filter I use for my betta tanks*On the site it does not say this, but in the store they carry one for a 3 gallon tank.* http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productI...
And the heater I use- http://www.petco.com/product/102429/Hydor-Mini-Aqu...
No more than 5 pellets per day. :)
Also, a bettas temp needs to be at least 75F, but a constant 78F is best and can be effectively achieved using a heater instead of keeping your house that hot, lol!
Source(s): How to cycle a tank, VERY important. I think it was ammonia building up that killed your bettas, sadly, the pet stores never usually explain how ot cycle a tank to new fish keepers! http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/fishless_cyc... - Anonymous5 years ago

A Betta needs a 5 gallon cycled aquarium to live for an extended period of time. Until you except that, they are going to keep dying. You can pick up a used 5G (with light, filter, and heater) on craigslist for less than $20 pretty easy. ALL fish need proper and stable water conditions. Bettas are probably the most misunderstood/abused fish next to goldfish. Just because they can "survive" for a sort period of time in a bowl, doesn't mean they are happy or even healthy.

I'm really sorry your fish died. ):
If you had a 2+ gallon tank with water conditioner, a small heater, a small filter, and fed him you didn't do anything wrong. Most of the time at pet stores the fish are kept in bad conditions, causing them to die early. Next time you get a fish, look to see if it looks alright. If they've got a fuzzy looking coat, ragged fins, or are slow and lethargic they probably are sick.
The fish may have died because of shock. Sometimes if the water temperature is too different between the pet store container and the tank, it can shock the fish into an early death.

Did you have at least a 2.5 gallon, a gentle filter, and an aquarium heater?
-If you had a bowl, that was not an appropriate home for the Betta.
-Fifteen days is a long time to go without a water change. Their water should be cleaned on a weekly basis by performing weekly water changes of about 25%
-Betta's are tropical fish and their water temperature should be maintained between 77F-82F. Cooler water will cause lethargic behavior and an overall decline of health.
Please stop using all caps.
~What temperature was your water? "good" is not a temperature.
~Did you test your water quality?
~Do you have a filter?
~What size tank do you have? "enough" is not a tank size.
I'd love to help you, but you need to be specific.

Hmm.. it could be "New Tank Syndrome".
That's when you didn't cycle your tank before putting the fish in. Cycling is basically running the filter for 3-4 weeks or until the nitrite/ammonia cycles establish themselves.
Also, for tanks, 25% water changes should be done weekly. Make sure you are NOT doing FULL water changes! Or you'll have to re-cycle your tank and have ammonia spikes (which kill your fish)!

I'm really sorry. :( I just lost my beta after 2 years.
You most likely made the water too hot or cold but you probably actually didn't put in little pills or drops to get rid of chlorine. Maybe you over fed him. You should ask your mum were she got him, when you got him he might have had an illness or something.
Again, Sorry. I hope that helped. :)

Often times fish from pet stores die from stress of the journey to the pet store you probably did nothing wrong but you should never buy a fish from a store unless it has been their for at least three weeks. The fact that it died so soon after you got it most likely means that it is the pet store to blame not you.

it could have been an accident that someone in your household was afraid to let you know about lol. did you mistakenly over feed it? i hope you didnt have it in the tank with another fish, beta fish are attack fish and can stir up brawls with other fish resulting in ones fish's ehem untimely death. if the tank was small you should have cleaned it sooner than what the fish store lady said due to its size. or maybe it was sick. thats all i got for you
