why are you 'pro-choice' or 'pro-abortion'?
first..i'd like to make it known that i am NOT trying to shove my beliefs down anyone's throats because i know i will have little or no impact on anyone that supports this side. i'm just curious because it can help me move my thesis for AP composition.
first question; how would you define pro-choice or pro-abortion? they actually seem really similar to me and i'd like a definition from some one that actually stands on this position rather than a pro-lifer's definition.
second point; how do you justify the killing of a fetus? i've done a little research and most abortionists/pro-choicers use the argument that a fetus is not an example of human life. but for something/someone to be living, doesn't it have to grow/develop/make its own cells/ etc? then there are others that say that a fetus is human life, but it is only a "potential" human. so...would that make actual newborns "potential" children, and children "potential" adults and so on? would the killing of newborns or children be okay? to my understanding there isn't much physical difference between a fetus five minutes before he's delivered and five minutes after, he's only gone from being a "fetus" to a "newborn".
the killing is also justified if it is predicted that the baby will potentially die the second after he is born. well, couldn't the same be applied to cancer patients? theoretically, someone with cancer "should" die because they have an incurable disease, but there are many cancer survivors, and many people overcoming their disease. i know quite a few women that have been told by their doctors that their babies would die once born, or be born with down syndrome, but they have all carried through with their pregancies and have had healthy, fully-functioning babies. is there any foolproof way to detect a disease the baby may have months in advance? would that still make killing them right?
abortion is also often justified if the mother's health is in danger. the procedure usually done is partial birth abortion (i am aware of the ban), usually at about five months. but by five months the baby is viable and can survive out of his mother under intensive care. how come the life cannot be salvaged?
and then, there is always the rape/incest card; but actually, from my personal experience and research that i've done, the percentages of women that have had abortions because of rape/incest are significantly smaller than those that have had abortions for other reasons. many of these women have not had abortions because they feel as though they shouldn't continue the violence that was done to them. so why should a woman who willingly had unprotected sex, knowing the risks of stds or sti's and pregnancy have an abortion JUST because it's legal? while her uterus IS part of her own body, the baby is not, and his life should at least be respected.
again, i'm not trying to force my beliefs on anyone because that would really be a pointless and tiring thing to do over the web. but there isn't anything wrong with a healthy debate ;P
ps- i'm writing a persuasive essay for english...

I'm pro-choice because it's a complicated decision, with a lot of factors, and I don't think it's my right to invade another person's private life and tell them what to do. I'm not the one who will have to go through the pregnancy, all of its risks and problems, and then raise a child. Some people simply cannot afford to have a child. And the adoption argument is weak. There are thousands upon thousands of unadopted children living in group homes as we speak. A lot of people don't even trust that option. You have no say in the adoptive parents treatment of a child. They could turn out to be horrible. That's a big risk.
Also, there is debate on when the fetus becomes a "viable" human. Whenever that may be, if the mother's mental or physical well-being is at stake, why should her welfare and life be compromised? I don't understand why a possible human life is more important than the human life carrying it. I care about women's welfare.
People love to talk about accountability, but half of those people, men, will never have to go through the dangers of pregnancy. Additionally, how is it accountable to have a child you can't care for? That makes no sense to me.
And judging someone who accidentally got pregnant is very illogical to me. Sure, there is birth control, but none of it is 100% effective, and abstinence does not work. Most of the people promoting it aren't abstinent themselves. So it is not realistic.
That's a beginning of the reasons.

Pro Choice

There's no such thing as "pro-abortion". Well, maybe a handful of people believe strongly enough in the evils of humanity to think that we should cease to exist; however, the vast majority of people, regardless of political stripes, agree that procreation is, writ large, a benefit to society.
However, that's a generality, and may not speak to every particular circumstance.
Being pro-choice doesn't mean that I like abortion. What it means is that I don't feel qualified to tell other people what to do with their own bodies. I believe that they should be able to choose for themselves on an individual basis, and I do *not* believe that this should be a choice made by the State (...well, maybe in extraordinarily rare circumstances of incapacity and medical necessity, but that's neither here nor there).
It's a freedom thing. We as a society are not empowered to take power over the bodies of individuals.
As for your second question, about justifying the killing of a foetus... Firstly, the question of definition of human life is not an easy one. Your observation comes down to fuzzy logic. Yes, a few minutes before birth, there's not much difference between the foetus and a human child. But a few minutes after conception, there's not much difference between the unfertilized egg and the fertilized egg. Somewhere in between, the foetus turns into something that we begin to recognize, at least morally, as being human. On a legal level, there has to be a threshold.
On the moral level...well, that's something I leave to the mother to sort out with her own conscience.

This is an incredibly complicated issue and I understand why people have such different opinions on it. Here is MY opinion:
I don't know anyone "pro abortion". Abortion sucks. A woman should NEVER use abortion as a form of birth control. Women and men need to be responsible if they don't want to have a kid through the use of accepted birth control methods.
That being said, if a mother does somehow get pregnant while not wanting her baby, I am completely for an abortion. Reason? I know what happens to unwanted children in this world. They have a ridiculously higher likelyhood of being criminals and having other serious social problems. If a child is wanted, I welcome them into the world, but if they are not, the rest of us suffer. In some sense, I think it's unfair for the child to be brought into a world where it's not wanted. I wouldn't want that...I'd rather not exist. But, this is my opinion only.

I know....I know....but I am pro-abortion....sometimes you just gotta.....I hate to say it, it is so ugly, but millions of women do it....millions. As for the fetus, its not even considered a fetus unit about what.......6 weeks....you usually have an abortion before then. Even if you do it 7-10 wks...the fetus is not somone you know, you have not felt it move, you cant see it in a sonogram. Women make their own choices, some women know that they can not afford to raise a child or that they could not take care of child....or some are too young...ok, so u would say adoption........The minute you get that little lump in your belly....your hooked......you are in love and how could you give that cchild up?????? Especially with the world today...I could not have a child, give him/her up and go on thinking that she is not being taken care of, that she could be molested.....anything...killed by her adoptive parents...it happens! I dont know...I just feel that a women has a choice.....like you said, rape, incest...anything...it is a womans own body and she can decide what goes on with it. Like you said everyone has their own opinion and it sux, its a horrible subject, but its one that exist and its one that is so major it is a part of our presidental elections. But when you do you have a baby.....you take care of it and give it all the love that it deserves!

and as for using protection.....sometimes it fails!

My, for someone who is not trying to force their beliefs on anyone, you sure are using incendiary language!
First, Choice is just that...CHOICE. This means everyone is able to make their own CHOICE based on their beliefs and morals.
Second, my uterus is my uterus and not an incubator for a fetus that I do not want growing within me. If (and this is a huge if) the fetus is able to sustain life outside the uterus, let it.

The primary function of our government is to defend the Right to Life - as stated clearly in our Declaration of Independence. There is no right to an abortion - you won't find it anywhere in the founding documents.
A human before birth is still a living human in a normal stage of its life. It is certainly being killed by an abortion.
Therefore, in the interest of honesty and the humane intent of our nation's creation, I have to side with the Right to Life.
I can make exceptions for rape or incest.

I am Pro-Life and also against mixing religion with politics. My very strict religious believes should not be imposed on you. Taking a life is wrong in my book but imposing my beliefs to be made law is also wrong by the U.S. Constitution .

I am pro-life because the Bible defines fetus's as life. I stick by the Bible :)
