Can someone else homeschool your kids?

I was wondering if someone wanted to homeschool, but had to work, could someone else do it? Would it have to be a certified teacher or could it be someone who is also homeschooling their own kids?

Update:

I was planning on homeschooling my kids myself. I was asking for someone else.

    Depends on your local laws.

In our area, Florida, the parent has to "direct" the home education. But that can include directing another person who teaches the child. The person doing the teaching wouldn't have to be a teacher, unless the parent skips the "home education" requirements and instead homeschools using the "qualified tutor" option and has the tutor complete reports to be submitted to the school district.

I've known a few people who have homeschooled their children but have paid someone else to do much of the teaching. Some have sent the child to another homeschooling family and included the child in whatever that family has planned. But again, it depends on local law as to whether it would be allowed in some other area....

Yes, depending on your states laws. You need to contact your local home-school association to find out this info. Where I live I can not only tutor home-schoolers I can also be the sole teacher of their subjects. I recently taught two twins all of their subjects under the guise of the parents. When I was home schooling my children we traded kids and then also taught them together for certain things...some parents have a gift in one area and teach it.

It really depends on your state. In most regions the parent oversees the homeschool but this can mean that they direct the child to be tutored by other people as part of a plan they design.

  • This depends on the state you live in. In some states, anyone can homeschool anyone's kids. In others, you have to be a certified teacher if you are homeschooling children that aren't your own.

It depends on the state you live in. Also, FYI, the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) will fight for the right for an individual to homeschool his/her own children but not for the right of that same individual to homeschool someone else's children.

I imagine that just at some states like Illinois do not have a homeschooling statute but consider homeschools to be private, legal schools that this same law (if it is in effect in a state) would allow for an individual to homeschool someone else's child. The child would be considered to be a student in that individual's unregistered, private school.

Added to what BraxOwl said, there might be a legal difference between, say, having your kid involved in a co-op or group for a particular subject and handing your kid off to someone else for everything. There may also be the option of hiring professional tutors, but that would be extremely expensive assuming such tutors were even available in your area.

Where I live you can. In the group we're in, there's also a lot of trading. Two families trade children for certain subjects. The kids are all at one house for science on say Tuesday, then all at the other house for art on say Friday.

In some states this is allowed, and in some states it is not. You will have to find out the legalaties of your state. A good place to start is HSLDA.ORG
