Why Do We Require a Bandwidth Of Twice The Data Rate To Achive Efficient Communication?

    Queueing theory suggests a relationship between average response time and percentage utilisation of a resource. There is a pronounced "knee" in the curve so that response time increases quickly when utilisation is above 70%. Therefore keeping the resource to 50% busy will avoid the long average response times.

    Really, the question is flawed.

    First of all "efficient communication" is a subjective term. Instant messaging would certainly be considered "efficient communication" by the millions of people who use it daily - and it requires almost no bandwith at all. You can't get much more efficient then "Instant" messaging.

    And secondly, "twice the data rate" is an unclear statement. Twice "what" data rate? The question doesn't really make sense.
