Why is suicide such a huge taboo?

Before you try to track me down, no, i'm not suicidal. But I have always wondered why suicide is such a huge taboo. There are far worse fates in this world than death. Obviously religion plays a heavy factor, but it was obviously taboo back when it was all in it's infancy. So, what do you all think?

Update:

Of cousre, I ask this after somebody asks what the quickest way to commit suicide is. I can't win lol

It's taboo because the very idea is incomprehensible to most people. Death is everything humans try to avoid and what most people fear. The human instinct is to stay alive and escape harm, so when someone does exactly the opposite they are almost seen as inhuman. Weird and confusing.

Also there is a lot of guilt because suicide is almost always seen as preventable. So with suicide people usually think there is someone to blame, someone who should have helped, someone who let the person down.

I don't mind talking about it or anything but i can understand why someone wouldn't and i think its because so many people are hurt by it parents friends etc when someone takes they're own life theres just too many people hurt so even people who havent been touched by it shouldnt openly talk about it because you dont know if someones brother or friend has commit suicide

I'm not too sure why. For me, I view suicide as a purely selfish act. It lies in the fact that in the end, although the person commiting suicide is essentially "free" from their problems, they still forcefully ripped themselves out of their loved ones' lives. There is so much sadness and pain that follows suicide and in my opinion it's just like giving everyone that loves you a big "F**K YOU I'M OUTTA HERE".

It is so taboo because it is very painful for the people who loved the person who commits it.

this question is obtusely ludicrous. all answers to follow will be even more ludicrous. the concept of suicide is self defeating and mundane. a coward's way out of dealing with everyday life. some lives are worse than others. paris hilton's grandfather gave 98% of the hilton legacy to charity while some ignorant d-bag dials 911 cuz mcdonald's charged her for mcnuggets that she won't get cuz they are out. two extreme situations that made headlines. some weep, some gloat. get over it and move on.

Other than it is a waste of potential and the gift of live, there is the pain that is inflicted on the ones left behind.
