Why is it that 'fridge' is short for 'refrigerator', but there's no 'd' in refrigerator?

Shouldn't it just be 'frige' then?

No more jelly beans, please, my mind has gone into another dimension.

It is because, I, the Ever Awesome, Chiliman, have stolen all the d's from refrigerator!!! I'm using them in some questionable experiments, the likes of which could have me brought before the UN Security Coucil if they were ever to find out!!!
