Usually an ultra light rod and reel is used for panfish. The light line gives the small lures better action than heavier line, and the rod makes detecting light bites easier. I have spools of 2 and 4lb. test for my rig. It's a lot of fun catching fish on an ultra light, because even smaller fish will put up a good fight. You can catch big fish on an ultra light, you just have to be careful while playing them. If you're fishing tough conditions, going to an ultra light can help you catch more game fish, too. Pressured fish, extremely clear water, and calm water are a few of the conditions I'll use my ultra light for walleye or bass. A 1/16th oz. jig tipped with a small leech or minnow is my favorite ultra light lure for walleye. I've taken walleye up to 28", pike to 38", and bass to 25" on my ultra light. If you're going to target game fish, make sure your hooks are sharp and your drag is properly set. When I have a bigger fish on, I like to "back reel" when the fish makes a run.

Ultra light action refers to well, the action of the rod and being an ultra light is lighter than light and not much strength in the backbone. A UL rod is anywhere from 1 to 6 pound test or less and can be any from 2 feet long to 14 feet, but once you get passed the 8 foot mark, those rods are either light or medium. I've seen custom super ultra light spinning rods made for 1/2 to 1 pound line... Those would be pretty fun to hang into anything with. Artie's answer makes a little bit of sense. "...and will not be able to change a fish's direction if it weighs more than four pounds. (two kilos)" That's not true. I use ultra light gear for surf fishing and the latest outfit has been a UL 4 1/2 foot Garcia rod with a matching Mitchell 308 reel. A few weeks ago I went in the morning and flylined whole dead anchovies in the surf and I was knocking the crap out of the local skates, rays, and guitarfish. I even caught a small leopard shark, which is more than four pounds. So in other words, as long as you know what the hell you're doing, and you know how to play the fish, you can land just about anything on 4 pound line.

Almost any of the fish that do not get over 5 lbs.But it is possible to catch even bigger fish with it. Most people in my area use them for Crappie, Bream, and all varieties of sun fish. It's a fun way to fish.

Mine is a Shimano - $25 special from WalMart - and I have caught probably hundreds of fish over the past 5 yrs.
The only thing I have had to do is change the line when it starts to curl too much.

Mostly used for panfish such as crappie, bream blue gill and bass.with light line they are a lot of fun to use and more of a challenge to get the fish in.

Trout, crappie, perch, bluegill, and other panfish are common quarry for those fishing ultralight. I love spring fishing with small jigs for crappie on 2 and 4 lb. test. If you are targeting larger quarry such as bass, muskie, pike, and catfish...then you would go with larger tackle and heavier line. Good luck and tight lines!
