Why is Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber considered a musical instead of an opera?

In my experience, Cats seems to have all the elements of an opera.

Because there is lots of dancing and music. An opera has music and singing, but not really dancing. Plus, the singing in an opera tells a story while the singing in musicals is about the story.

Opera can have spoken word, but the majority of the work is sung, with "speeches" as songs done in the recitative style - like a sung monologue.

    Cats has too much dialogue.

There is spoken word in Cats. Opera is all singing.

I do agree cats are pretty operatic!

  • i think, and i'm not sure, that an opera can not have any spoken lines...not even one. but i dont recall whether or not cats had any.
