    5. 35% of what number is 70?

    think of it this way, if 35% is 70, then 1% is what?

    (35+35)=70, so 1% is 2!

    now times 1% by 100 to get 100%!

    the answer is 200

    1. If a discount of 20% off the retail price of a desk saves Mark $45, how much did he pay for the desk?

    you can do the same as above, or you can do it this way, since easy numbers were given

    20%=1/5 =45

    so 45*5 = 225. this is the retail price, now minus the 20% off (45) and you get 180!

    4. Art realized that he had 2 more quarters than he had originally thought in his pocket. If all of the change in his pocket is quarters and it totals to $8.75, how many quarters did he originally think were in his pocket?

    quarter =.25

    minus the 2 quarters he didnt think he had from 8.75 and you get 8.25

    now, each dollar has 4 quarters, so 8*4=32

    now plus three for .75 cents

    and the answer, 32+3 =35 quarters!

    First question, they say that 35% of what number is 70.

    Set "what number" to be Y.

    Therefore 35% of Y = 70

    35/100 x Y = 70

    Now isolate the unknown (in this case Y) on one side. To do that, we have to get rid of the 35/100. Since its multiplied by Y, when we move it to the other side, we divide.

    Y = 70 divide 35/100

    = 70 x 100 / 35

    = 200

    So the unknown number is 200

    Second one is pretty much the same

    20% x Y = $45

    Again, isolate Y by moving "x 20%" to the other side changing it to "divide 20%"

    Y = 45 x 100 / 20

    = $215

    last one is still about the same (actually i don't think you need algebra to solve any of these, but what the heck). In this case I set the unknown Y to be "the amount of quarters that he actually has in his pocket"

    I know that the amt. of quarters x 25cents gives me $8.75.

    so changed to maths... Y x 0.25 = 8.75

    again isolate Y by moving 0.25 over...

    Y = 8.75 / 0.25 = 35

    Since he had 2 more coins than he originally thought he had,

    35 - 2 = 33

    5. is E (200 *.35=70) to find a percent of something, change the % to a decimal point (.) and multiply it by w/e the number is.

    1. neither answer because 20% off $225 would save you $45

    4. is D. there are 4 quarters to a dollar. He had 2 more than he thought, which is 50 cents. so to find out what he originally thought he had, subtract the 50 cents. you are now left with $8.25. Simply times that number by 4 since 4 quarters eual one dollar and you get 33

    D 70/35 = 2 x 100 = 200

    C 45/20 = 2.25 x 100 = 225 less the 45 = 180

    E 33

    Algebra 1 sure has gone downhill since I slept through it in 6th grade. This isn't even algebra. It's basic arithmetic. And are you asking us to do your homework for you? #1. 70 is 35% of something. What is that something. Come on. How about this. 35 is 35% of something. And that something is 100. Obviously. So. 70 is twice 35. What number is 70 35% of? #2. 20% is what he didn't pay of the full price. Which is 100%. So how much did he pay? 80%. Why? Because 80 is 20 less than 100. So.... he paid 4 times as much as he saved. Which was 45 dollars. And 45 dollars times 4 is.... hmmm, this is so pathetic, I just can't stand it.

    For percentages, you move the decimal 2 to the left to make them useful. So for the first problem, 35% would be .35, multiply that your choices to see which equals 70. In this case it's E, 200.

    70|.35=200

    45|.20=225

    225-45=180

    8.75|.25=35-2=33

    OK

    .35x = 70

    x = 70/.35

    x = 200 ; answer is E

    .20x = 45

    x = 45/.20

    z= 225

    225 - 45 = 180 is what he paid and he saved 45. Answer is C.

    2 (.25) + x = 8.75

    .50 + x = 8.75

    x = 8.25

    8.25/.25 = 33 ; He thought he had 33 quarters (8.25). Answer is D.

    Hope that helps.

    The answer to the first question is 200

    For the Second Questions when I do the problem I get the answer $225 which I do not see so I wonder if you put the numbers in wrong

    The third question the answer is 33
