Yes, if it is specifically a uniform, not something you would wear out of work, and employer does not provide facilities for you to do your laundry at work.

The allowance is very small. Say it is £45 a year. You are only £45 x 20% = £9 in pocket. You can claim 6 back years for this.

Other answers are not correct. If you go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and search for 'fixed rate deductions' you will find a list of jobs - if yours is there, you will see a fixed rate allowance which has been agreed between the unions and HMRC. For instance, if you work with food, the allowance is £45.

If your job is not listed you will need to write to your tax office setting out how much the washing of your uniform costs you.

In both cases, they will grant the allowance in your tax code.

    Simples,

I used to just sign a requisition form for a new uniform, and hand the old one in.

OK, my shirts & underwear were washed at home, but I did not see the sense in my washing government issue stuff.

Well that is how it goes in the RAF, so I guess it should apply to all who don an uniform, be it military, NHS, or any civil duty garment.

Hi, if you are self-employed, this is true, if you are PAYE, this is un-true. Hope this helps:):)
