Caring of Tulsi plant - Holi basil?

I am trying to grow a tusli plant in my backyard (in California). My plant dies every year. How do you prevent a tulsi plant from dieing?

    Its a very easy plant to grow and reproduce.. I have a big one with some smaller that sprouted from seeds.

    You need regular watering especially if it's in a pot. Do yours die in winter or it dies during normal conditions?
