Your honest opion of Star Wars, the original movie?

I grew up sheltered living in my parents house well past the age of 18. Now, at 27 years old, I am finally getting to see movies that I missed out on. Tonight I am watching Star Wars, the original Star Wars movie from 1977. So, my question is, what's the big deal over the movie? So far, I haven't found a single thing about the movie that I like. I literally think that it's one of the worst movies in history, and I have seen hundreds of movies over the past few years (old and new).

Just a few reasons I dislike it:

The robots all look like Lego toys and the sets all look like a children's volcano for Science class or a craft project of clay gone seriously wrong. The lazer guns look like cheap dollar store toys. Most of the movie is in gibberish spoken by robots, and those strange guys with the brown robes and you can't even understand most of it. The humans seem like an afterthought in the movie, and have awful roles. Darth Vader is an awful villian, with his childlike robot look, and his voice that does not sound the least bit scary. In fact, he sounds like a happy robot gargling mouthwash when he talks, and Lego makes him look scarier. Princess Leia looks all of what 12 years old?

Does anyone else agree with me, even remotely? Why or why not? If you liked the movie, what made you like it, what did you see in the movie that maybe I did not see watching it the first time? By the way I have talked to other people including my boyfriend, who is much older than I am (I'm 27, he's 53) and he doesn't like it either, so I know it's not just my age. So, what's the deal, why do people like it? And don't say because everyone else did, because I don't think what's popular is a reason to like anything.

Update:

Don't say it's a must see classic film. Say why you liked it. I saw it, didn't like it, so if you liked it, why did you like it?

My ID will probably give me away but, no, I don't agree with you even remotely HOWEVER ... I do see your point.

You're right, it isn't your age per say but it is part of it. It has more to do with it being a "different time". I'll try to explain that the best I can. Have you ever seen some of the old 50s movies where all the parents were horrified to find their kids listening to that "Devil Music" called rock and roll? For my generation, I'm 40, we looked back at that kind of stuff and said "Dude ... that ain't Rock & Roll ... if you wanna rock then you gotta have some AC/DC and Black Sabbath and Lynard Sknyard ... that's rocking". Think about what you would say to answer the question of what rock & roll means to you. It's a generational kind of thing. Sadly the Star Wars Saga falls into that category of "you had to be there". It's almost impossible for new fans to be impressed by Star Wars ... that's where the FX comes into the equation. Others have said that it is an absolute classic that must be watched ... in many ways that is very true but you can't see the "why" in that because the FX looks cheesy to you ... compared to the FX of today ... I'll agree, it does look cheesy ... lol ... but back in 1977 the FX in this movie blew our freaking minds. The FX in the Star Wars movies was like nothing we had ever seen before ... I still remember sitting in the theater to see this movie, I was 8, the music cut way down low and then that low rumble started and it got louder and louder and just about the point you were going to say WTF this HUGE white triangle slashes across the screen ... it keeps going and going until it moves past you and you get to see what it would look like to be at the back end of a rocket. From then on we were glued to the screen. I do think that you are letting your dislike of the FX taint your view of what is actually them most important part of the Star Wars Saga ... the story itself. It is the classic "hero's Journey" type of story. People look at me funny when I say that Star Wars is one of the most twisted "love stories" you will ever see ... lol ... it really is but if I tell you why I give away one of the "twists" that made the story work. I can tell you that the next movie in the series, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, there is a scene in it that has been voted by SAG as the # 4 most shocking revelation in the history of film. You also have to look at what was going on in the world at the time this film came out. Another way to look at the film is that it is a classic good vs evil, David vs Goliath kind of story that always has the "good guys" winning in the end no matter the cost. At that time a story like that struck a cord with millions of people in the US in a time when things weren't looking to good. Iran held our embassy employees hostage, the Cold War was building into what many fear would be a show down that made the Cuban Missile Crisis look like a mild "tiff". Russia would soon invade Afghanistan, that would cause the US to boycott the summer Olympics in Moscow that year but not before the US got in a good "body blow" on Russia when a bunch of college boys showed up in Lake Placid for "The Miracle On Ice" story of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team winning the gold medal ... beating a Russian team that most considered to be to be the best team in the world on route to winning that medal. They were "weird" times to be sure and when really looking back at the history of those days it really is kind of hard to not include the 3 Star Wars movies that came out during that time as having a large bit of influence on how things turned out. I may just feel this way because I'm a true Star Wars nut but there is much to think about when you look at the movies in that way. You also have to remember that we didn't have the net back then, no cell phones, no computers ... the only "video game" we had was "Pong" ... suffice to say that we had to find something to do with out time and when Star Wars came out if became the perfect thing to talk, speculate, and wonder "what if ?". Of course you usually did all this talking and stuff while you were playing D & D but it kept the topic clear ... lol ...

    The rest of my answer:

    .

As for why I personally liked it. Well, I have to admit that Princess Leia was one reason ... lol ... she was the "geek version" of Marylin Monroe. Both the character and the actress who played her, Carrie Fisher, were 18 at the time. I immediately felt like Luke Skywalker as we were both just simple good hearted "farm boys" yearning for adventure. I had friends who fit the mold of all the other characters ... Han Solo, Chewy, the bickering droids, the girl you knew who was your "Princess Leia", for me it was Melissa Locke ... it's funny how the memories start crashing in as you remember things. Then there were the "catch-phrases" that all of a sudden EVERYBODY were saying ... "may the Force be with you", "Would somebody get this big furry walking carpet out of my way", "Wonderful girl ... either I'm gonna kill her or I'm starting to like her", "Try not ... do or do not ... there is no try" (that's from the next movie in the series ep V). Then there were all the bruises and welts we all got when we picked up sticks and pretended they were lightsabres and we were Obi-Wan and Darth Vader dueling ... the list can go on and on. It is truly sad that you can't experience what it felt like back then ... different world.

I would ask that you at least watch the next movie in the trilogy ... Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. It is widely considered to be the best of the Original Trilogy movies ... if that one doesn't do much for you then the others probably won't either but you might want to give ep I a shot ... the FX is top of the line in today's movie business as Lucas owns the best companies in the field.

Star wars is a great classic film! For it's time, it had good special affects and Star battles. The characters were fine and the relationship between the characters and the storyline. It was a unique movie in it's time and it influenced Star Trek to completely pull its SECOND SERIES which had already been planned to begin production and to make a movie instead. I mean really what futuristic space movie is better than Star Wars? Star Trek is good but not as good. It was a cult phenomenon, some fans seen it 100-200 times. People went back again and again to see the film. It stayed popular for years even upon re-release 20 years later. It had two highly successful sequels and the SECOND trilogy doesn’t even come close to being as good (even with better special affects, battles, digital technology, etc). A good movie doesn’t always depend on the best special affects; it has to have a good story, good characters, and emotional quality. It has to draw you in and make you want to come back for more. Star Wars was the champ until ET came along. I could say ET was overrated too but for what it was (a family picture); it was also very unique and moving. Titanic was the next phenomenon until the latest Batman. Many people say that movie was overrated, but I thought it was a very good film (and a fine performance by Ledger).

When movies came out before about the early 80's there was no such thing as wide release. I lived in central California and the movie took about 6 months after its release before it came to town so there was a ton of hype surrounding it because nothing was remotely as advanced in special effects. I personally was a huge sci-fi fan and was amazed at how great the droids and robots and aliens were. To me it felt like I had been transported to outer space, another galaxy even. Princess Leia was beautiful. Han Solo was a man's man. Luke was basically a normal guy who was thrust into this amazing adventure. By today's standards it doesn't seem like as big of an idea but trust me, in the seventies this movie set new standards that weren't touched for a very long time.

You have to keep in mind, the first movie was filmed in the mid '70s so you have to allow some license for crappy sets, jerky puppets, etc. Some of it is cheesy, some of that is intentional.

The story is the star in Star Wars. All the effects and aliens and space ships are just bonuses. Watch the other two, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi before you make your final decision. I'm not going to tell you why you should like it. If you don't like it, you don't like it.

Star Wars was amazing, and many people still consider amazing, because they had a very low budget, and at the time it seemed extremely real. The also used many models for the ships instead of graphics, which took a long time to make. Star Wars are not my favorite movies, but the newest one it very good.

I agree with the first post, this is a MUST see classic. Remember that this was back in the late 70's and they didn't have the technology that we have become accustomed to.
