the story of the Snedeker family's alleged encounter with the paranormal in Southington, CT
The story was featured in the book In A Dark Place by Ray Garton, and an episode of the A Haunting series titled A Haunting in Connecticut.

yes it is based of of a true story
i think its either the travel channel or the discovery channel, but once of them has an episode about waht happend

It's probably based on a real life story that wasn't close to what the movie depicts. Nowadays, every "ghost" movie is supposedly based ona true story. Don't believe that ****. It's FAKE. And that movie looks bad. Don't go see it.
The true story is probably just a guy that "thought" he saw a ghost, and it was actually his wife.
