Why do christians think their religion is the "only true" religion?

When they all draw from essentially the same text??

Update:

i think you'll find that christianity is based on a book

Oh, and apologies, the question was not worded very well, I was thinking more the religions themselves rather than the individuals within them

Also, a lot of people seem to think that buddhism and hinduism are forms of christianity, which is quite false

I don't think the bible says anything about Christianity being or not being the only religion. I think Christianity like everything else evolved through the ages, and somewhere during that time the ministers(priests) feared that it became somewhat threaten by other religions, or maybe because of the power abuse it sustained, it became unreliable.

I blame them (the ministers), for abuse of any religion, especially a peaceful one. Their greed drove them to making wars in the name of ignorant people's belief, and thus, they managed to make people think that their religion is the only one, and in the process 'killing' other religions so the one will survive.

All religions don't draw from the same text... the Abrahamic faiths have the same scriptural roots (the Torah), but other faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Paganism, Tribal religions, Ancestral worship religions etc don't draw from the same scriptures.

But it is a basic tenet of Christianity that the Bible is the only true "Word of God," and that the word is meant for everyone to hear and live by, therefore they think it is the only one correct religion.

Not every Christian believes that, however, but it is pretty commonly held among Christians... further there are some denominations that would go so far as to say that their particular version of Christianity is the only possible correct one, because they think that only their interpretation of the scriptures is correct.

It is not that Christianity is the only true religion, but it is the only religion that deals with truth. Every other religion is based on some book or concepts; but Christianity is not based on any book; its foundation is Jesus, the son of God.

Because no other religion views Jesus as the sole redeemer of God's children. It's only natural for a Christian to assume that the Bible is right, just like it would be natural for a Hindu to assume the Vedas are right, Islam to assume the Qur'an is right, atheists to assume that none of them are right, and so on. In the end, one of them is going to be proven right.

Cos they be a quaint little backward people who believe their invisible space magician made the planet just for them and it is their job to convince the rest of the planet that this is so.

They are EXACTLY the same as their muzzle brothers who believe the same thing.

i have nothing against people who are into religion i honestly wish i was able to believe in religion, but i dont because most of the stuff is kind of ridiculous. and if you think about it the world would be so much better off without religion. think of all of the wars and people killed in the name of religion when almost all of them promote peace yet they find the need to kill people? like the islamic terrorists and their bombings. the stuff they beleive in tells them to kill is the worst thing you can do but they take pride in dying while killing others. and the main reason i dont beleive in god is because is because if god was so nice and forgiving, why doesnt he cure all the diseases killing millions like aids or stop all of the wars and the innocent people dying? and if it his "plan" for them all to die, why is he considered so nice and forgiving?

    Beats me!!

Christianity has been split into over 30,000 different denominations, sects and cults setting christian against christian and christians against everyone else!!

    God's work? Hardly!!

It must be the Devil and the Antichrist working together to divide, conquer and destroy christianity from the inside!!!

I accept the possibility that Christianity may not have all of the answers and that there may be other paths to God and spiritual enlightenment. Not all of us believe the same exact things.

Why is this question directed at only Christians? Whats your beef?

Every religious person believes that his or her religion is the 'only true' religion.

Even ask a Buddhist and he will tell you that you are living wrong, same goes for the atheist, who thinks all religions are wrong, and only he is right.

A better question to ask is "Why is everyone on Christian's nuts?"

    Answer that one for me.

It's not a religion, it's a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

And our Savior is the only one who died for us and rose again. Muhammad died, but didn't come back to life, neither did Buddha or Allah.
