    Read the question closely.

    To what extent...the most important...

Tactics is about what you do to win on a battlefield. Strategy is what you do so you can bring a winning force to a particular battlefield.

If you think tactics decided it, fine.

If you think strategy was more important, say why.

But there are MANY other factors to consider. Religious tolerance -- could Christians and Moslems live side by side? Or were the Crusades what created permanent hatred between both sides?

What was the Pope's role, and the role of European nations and leaders. The Byzantine emperor had originally called for help expecting to get mercenaries, not foreign armies. How did the decline of the Empire influence events?

Could individual leaders make a difference, e.g. Richard Lionheart and Saladin?

How old was Christianity (esp in its approved post-Constantine form) compared to Islam? What difference did this make?
