If Mel Kiper is so brilliant why hasn't he been hired as a GM?

I wouldn't really use the word brilliant to describe Kiper. He's a draft analyst, probably the best known draft analyst, but thats all he is.

GMs do more than draft. They negotiate contracts, they manage the salary cap, they decide who to sign, who to cut, who to franchise, who to trade. They make personel moves, like coaching staffs, scouts, etc. Mel Kiper could, at best, be offered a position as a scout with a team, but he'd be silly to leave ESPN. He's famous and he's pretty much got a guarenteed job. You take a job as a scout and you make some bad choices like Kiper has, and your job is at risk. The GM gets fired and the new one likes someone better, you have no job. He'll never be replaced at ESPN, no matter how poorly his draft selections do.

Another reason Kiper wouldn't ever be hired by an NFL team is that he knows everything. He's the type of guy who is never wrong. When someone goes against him, he gets very sarcastic and belittles them, because he's the expert. Wikipedia has a list of a bunch of his more famous "mistakes" and his reactions.

One was when the Colts didn't select Trent Dilfer. He totally blasted them, said they were stupid, said there was no way you could pass up a great QB like Dilfer when you have Harbaugh as your QB, and said thats why they'll always be the laughingstock of the league. We all know Dilfer wasnt that great and Harbaugh would lead the league in passing the next season.

Among his other notables, was saying Ryan Leaf's attitude would be a positive in the NFL and he'd be a great QB, Akili Smith would be great. He even said that Mike Williams would be the best player in the 2005 draft despite being out of football a whole year. When another analyst disagreed with him, he snapped back and said "I'll see you at his hall of fame induction" You're talking about a guy who's played 3 seasons and has about 30 catches for like 500 yards. I understand people make mistakes, but when you openly criticize anyone who disagrees with you, and you belittle them because youre ESPN's draft expert and therefore you feel your opinion is the only one that counts, you deserve all the criticism when you're wrong, as he is moretimes than not, and are not deserving of the label as an expert.

Mel Kiper is simply a scout. GM's make contract decisions , personnel decisions , and more but I don't know. I also think that Mel Kiper can't scout personalities in terms of team chemistry.

Because he's not brilliant. He and Mcshay are idiots. The only one of these so called draft experts I'll even consider listening to is Mayock on NFL network, the rest are simply using the "SWAG" method. Scientific Wild *** Guess!!!!

he is brilliant, as a scout. scouts work for the gm. gm's have way more responsiblity than to see how much "talent" a player has, they look at their qualities as a team player and chemistry they would have with the team, look at what happened to matt millen, he was a "great commentator" and that was it, single handedly picked two of the worst 1st round recievers ever and a qb bust.

You need to slap the person who told you he was brilliant. He's a freakin' ESPN analyst. The only ones even close to "brilliant" are the ones who actually PLAYED or COACHED in the NFL like Trent Dilfer.

Probably because their is a lot more to being a GM than just analyzing talent for the draft.
