Mailman Poll: Okay, so if you were a mail carrier and you were delivering the mail, what would you do if....?
you picked up the outgoing mail from someones mailbox, only to realize they were mailing a letter to a house 3 doors down the street..
Would you drop the letter in the mailbox of the house 3 doors down..??
Or, would you take the letter all the way back to the post office, process it, blah, blah... blah, and then re-deliver the letter 2 -3 days later?
Let's say the person mailing the letter is handicapped and was not able to walk the 3 house down to deliver it him/herself..
Or maybe they are a recluse or some other crazyschit* like that.
Stop questioning me, and just answer the freaking question already, people!!

If I was a mail carrier I would take it to the post office because there is probably some stupid rule or something that would cost me to get in trouble or lose my job or something if I didn't. Even if I thought no one would find out it would be my luck that the post office did this to check to see if I was doing my job and would fire me on the spot for not bringing the letter to the post office. They probably got someone in mind for my job and they want to catch me doing something wrong. I am not paranoid in the slightest way so don't accuse me of anything. I will cry if you do.

If I was going in the direction of the house it is addressed to, yes, I would leave it. I would use a pen to mark out the postage stamp so it can't be used again. If I was not going in that direction, then I would put it with the other mail I have collected, because it will get machine processed and sorted overnight and be returned to me the next morning, already sorted to that address.

Yes. The whole tradition of delivering one's own mail began in the Post Office's early stages (as in 1968) when someone brought up the topic of using less effort and allowing mailmen to deliver their own mail. This greatly anger the King of the Mailmen, who was a firm believer in the current law that all mailmen are banned from delivering their own mail. Greatly disouraged, the rebellious mailman (an undersized Canadian named Wally), set out on a journey to find other men to join his army. It was difficult, but eventually he eanded up with a gigantic idiot named Collin, and older lady named Fanny, as well as their pet chicken and dog, Gregory the Fifth and Ryansthumasfigglehorn, repectively. They went to the King of the Mailmen and duct taped him to his chair and promptly grabbed all their own mail as well as that of the other postal workers. Everyone was so happy that they all joined the rebellion, pushing The King (not to be confused with Elvis) out the window of his office to his demise. Then they placed Wally as their new ruler and changed the law that allows all mailmen today to deliver their own mail.

they are obligated to process it through the post office, to check the postage and everything. the person could have a reason for wanting the letter mailed, so I would just follow the rules of the job.

Ive mailed something to a neighbor 2 doors down because if they catch u outside, it's a 2 hour 'chat'. Legally, they have to process all mail.

I wouldn't even look at the address of every piece of outgoing mail I picked up - so I would grab it, stuff it in the bag with the rest and take it back to be processed.

I'd just drop it at the house. They wont make a big deal out of it if it's tampered with. It's more likely to get tampered with going through the system anyway. They'll probably just think they got someone (or walked themselves) and placed it in the box.

Last week I stuck a letter back in my mailbox because it did not belong to me........ it belonged to the house next door. I do not get paid to deliver mail, the mail carrier does.
<< wanted to show the mail carrier he was not doing his job properly.

I think they are required by law to send it off. You know how anal-retentive the effing Post Office is. Always assholes, they are. I stand in line for 30 minutes and they act like it's such an inconvenience to help me. They look at me with empty, cold black eyes, as they take my $13.84 and my box of frozen fish steaks. Would it kill them to try a little tenderness? Probably.
