Best electric fence for horses?
I am quite sure this is going to be a very debatable question.. i just want to know what other people use. I am getting a horse. and am going to start to put up my fence. and yes i am prepared, and i have a mini horse to keep her company. and around 10 goats all of which are hornless. I was thinking tape for visibility, but i don't like the fact it flutters in the wind and the constant need for tightning. I was thinking polyrope. i like electrobraid. but god its expensive.. any thoughts.. what works best for you guys?
thank you finally for a detailed answer.. and i know how to do it. i use polywire for my goats and mini.. but the horse is older.. and i want to make sure its visible, attractive, yet holds a shock!
also.. anyone use the electric gate handles? are they nice? or not really?

Electro braid is the name brand...of course it's expensive. You can buy the same thing in the store for about $70 per roll. Go to a farm supply store (Tractor supply, Agri Supply, etc). Buy the 5 foot metal T posts and the plastic insulators. I use 3 rows at 16", 32", and 48".
I put 4 x 4 posts on the corners. You are going to have to put them in concrete or brace them so they don't lean. One thing that looks nice is to use 3 posts on a corner with 2 x 6 rails. Cut the tops of the posts at an angle so they don't rot on top. I use a 2" slant (about 45 degrees). Put the other posts 8 feet out on each side of the 90 degree corner. You will need to buy ceramic insulators (stronger) and wood insulators for that part.
Order the free video on line from electrobraid. Watch it and then you will realize that this IS something you can do your self! Shop around and get the best prices.
Look at other people's fences! You will see that it's really not that hard.

I've only used my electric fence for subdividing my pasture, and I use 1/2" tape. It's thick enough for the horses to see well, and thin enough to keep from fluttering in the wind too badly. You could also get a roll of plastic stuff (surveyor's tape?) and tie it to the wire every so often to make it more visible to the horse.
I have used electric gate handles. They are nothing wonderful, but without them it would be very difficult for me to switch pastures yet still allow the horses access to the barn and water. If you use them you have to make sure the post where the gate hooks is sturdy, and the distance between it and the "hinge" of the gate is fairly short because the handle is kind of heavy compared to the wire, and will make your fence sag.

Poly tape or smooth wire, no barbed or it can badly harm animals. Poly tape is very inexpensive, get an inch wide or larger. If you want the posts you stick in the ground and can move, they are between $2 and $4 at Tractor Supply. The polytape is about $40 for 1/4 mile for an inch or 1/2 inch wide at horse.com .

I would use the electric tape, a nice wide white tape.
