My name is bryan, I breed and show purebred nubian, nigerian dwarf, and lamancha dairy goats. I have a quarter horse and a great dane, as well as a mini horse. I am currently going to college majoring in science, I am going to be a vet. My knowledge lies with goats. I know quite a bit, not everything, you never do, but i do like to share my knowledge about goats so people will be better prepared when they buy goats, and be more educated to take better care of them. I do use a separate e-mail which is foxfirenubians@aol.com I encourage any with goat questions to feel free to e-mail me. Goats are amazing animals that deserve to be cared for properly! I will soon have my care website updated.. I will post a link when i'm done. *UPDATE* my care page has been updated, visit www.foxfiredairygoats.com/care

  • Care of a rescued 6 y.o mare that is in foal?

Okay, I am taking in a 6 year old qh/haflinger cross mare this week. She foaled in april 2011. The stallion that she was penned with was not sold until august, so I'm pretty sure she is bred. I guess I'm just looking for a little more info about how to care for her and her foal. She will be housed with her 6 mo old colt, my 9 year old belgian, and 9 year old pony. I am guessing she is about 900 pounds, and about 15 hands. I feed my horses a round bale which typically lasts me 5 days, mostly in part to my belgian, is it okay for her to have free choice access to hay? They are also fed purina strategy twice a day.

Would this feeding regimen be sufficient for a pregnant mare? How much grain should I give? Is grass hay okay, or should I feed alfalfa? I am aware of shots and such during pregnancy, just unsure of how to feed her, and if i should use supplements. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

She is a little underweight at this time, which is one of the reasons I am taking her, they are not caring for her properly and she has been forced to stand in her own manure, I don't even want to think about how her feet look, not to mention she has been confined to a small area for quite some time... Should I feed extra to boost her weight, or just feed a normal amount to slowly build her weight up?

    Thank you for your time!

P.S. Don't tell me to ask a vet, because there are not any that i would trust around here, and almost none do farm calls around here anymore.

  • Question about 2 year old Haflinger mare?

    Okay, here is the story.

I would consider myself an advanced beginner as far as riding, with a ton of book knowledge, and plenty of hands on experience, having owned 2 horses for 2 years. I had an old quarter horse mare that passed away after a very harsh winter.

I have been looking for another horse for 2 months now. I found a 2 year old haflinger mare, that is halter broke, very sweet, good w/ farrier, and is well behaved. however, she is not broke.

Would it be possible, if i devote the time for me to train her? and perhaps start working on riding next year? I am involved with the local rescue, and have a lot of very horse savvy friends, that would help me learn. Do you think it would be wise? This mare will end up at a horse sale, which is in a very prominent meat buyer area, and i don't want that to happen to her. She is only $200, so even if I have to pay a trainer, which runs about $600 around here. Do you think it would be wise? I have another horse, which is currently with my goats, and regardless, I would like to get her a companion.

    Thank you!

  • question on mood swings, depression and medication?

I have diagnosed depression. I know that I could find better things to do then ask this on yahoo answers. but, i used to see a therapist, the timing became difficult to keep up, i was always missing an appointment, because I forget, and frankly it got very expensive.

I have refused medication for 3 years, I have taken: zoloft, wellbutrin, and prozac. None of which helped me.

this time of year is rough for me, its the anniversary of a relatives death, whom I was very close to, nothing seems to be going right in my life, I am falling into a deep rut, and its getting very hard. Suicide is on my mind quite often, and I cut for 3 years, the main reason I stopped was because i can't deal with the scars, and the last time i cut, i had to have 12 stitches, and everyone was on my case, and I can't stand doctors trying to say, it will all be okay.

I have horrible mood swings, trust issues, and abandonment issues.

What do you think my options are? I'm not currently suicidal, it just is often on my mind. I was debating taking medicine, though it hadn't taken it for so long because 1, it didn't work for me, 2. i don't want to have to rely on some pill to be happy. I don't even take a pill for a headache.

It's getting to the point, where I want to sleep all day, I'm always tired, i don't want to talk about my problems nor my past. I just hurt, I want to cry but can't. Its like my body tries to defend itself and pushes all emotions in some deep dark place, but when they come out, I break down.

I don't know what to do. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • I am approaching the one year mark with my boyfriend, ideas?

Me and My guy have been dating for a year on friday. We are taking a trip out of state to pick something up at the airport, in the afternoon, but during the day, we are going to site see.

I feel like he does everything for me, I want to show him how much he means to me, for half of our dates, I cook everything homemade, and we have a candlelight dinner.

I was going to give him some exotic soaps, and some other small things, but what do you think would be a good idea? He is so hard to shop for (like me).

All he wants is spend time with me, but I just want to show him how much he really means to me.

    Thanks guys!

  • Question about getting another horse?

    Hi,

Last year I had adopted the most wonderful horse. She recently passed away. I'm not looking right now, it was very hard losing my horse (she was old). I have riding experience, but not a ton.

If/when i'm ready for another horse. should i get a teenager? Or could i get a young one, and train it? I may not be equipped to do it myself, but a good friend which runs the rescue is very familiar. I would like to get a horse to barrel race at some point. Are young horses too frisky for a semi intermediate rider? I have very good balance. But my only fear as far as getting a young one, is high spirits. My old girl had spunk, but she never bucked, or threw me.

Can young horses (like under 2 or 3) be kept with goats. I know it varies, my old girl was great with goats. But she was raised with them. I know I won't have another horse like her. But I want a younger one, because it tore me apart to watch my old girl go downhill like that.

I thank anyone for any input.

  • What is a good laptop brand?

I am starting college classes in a few weeks.. and i need a laptop. I have had h.p my entire life. (the family has) we love it.. until the laptop my grandparents just bought a year and a half ago.. started acting up.. so I called h.p. and they told me they can't even give advice without charging me, because it was not under warranty.. it was doing stupid things like saying i had no sound driver, no c.d drive.. which are built in.. i had to run all over the web to fix it. i was very dissapointed with the customer service i got.

Is that a rarity? or do you think h.p is not a good brand? the laptop was almost a thousand dollars.. it was a very nice one.

I was wondering about dell? or toshiba? anyone had good luck?

or what brand would you recommend?

    Thanks guys

  • Fly Protection for horses?

Okay i am sure this is a touchy subject with a lot of debate, but

I am bringing home a quarter horse this weekend, I am adopting her. Now.. she seems to be a fly magnet, I have tried some fly sprays.. bronco sucks.. what works good as far as the sprays go? they seem to bother her legs the most..

I have heard good things about the seratoga summer turnout. any thoughts?

also what is a good weight builder? she is coming up to weight.. but still needs a little more, i feed alfalfa so i am thinking that will help a lot. she is a senior horse. but amazing..

I have seen these leg bands that go around the legs and supposedly repel flies.. anyone used these?

Thanks guys.. i really appreciate any input:)

  • Question about cat and her kittens? Kinda urgent?

My cat had kittens & they are 10 days old. She's not producing any milk, won't eat, or drink milk. The kittens will not drink the milk replacement from the bottle or dropper. We are taking them to the vet tomorrow, but is there anything to do right now?

  • Best electric fence for horses?

I am quite sure this is going to be a very debatable question.. i just want to know what other people use. I am getting a horse. and am going to start to put up my fence. and yes i am prepared, and i have a mini horse to keep her company. and around 10 goats all of which are hornless. I was thinking tape for visibility, but i don't like the fact it flutters in the wind and the constant need for tightning. I was thinking polyrope. i like electrobraid. but god its expensive.. any thoughts.. what works best for you guys?

  • Questions about Miniature Horses?

Ok so here's the story. I am getting a minature horse from my friend. She was raised around goats, so I am keeping her with my nubians and lamanchas. I was wondering. Does anyone know any good websites to learn about them. and please don't google it then tell me. I have done all that. I want to hear from people who raise them. or have owned them. Like how to gain their trust. What are some good supplies i should have handy. Whether or not they need a blanket, and when.

    Thanks guys!
