What is a good laptop brand?

I am starting college classes in a few weeks.. and i need a laptop. I have had h.p my entire life. (the family has) we love it.. until the laptop my grandparents just bought a year and a half ago.. started acting up.. so I called h.p. and they told me they can't even give advice without charging me, because it was not under warranty.. it was doing stupid things like saying i had no sound driver, no c.d drive.. which are built in.. i had to run all over the web to fix it. i was very dissapointed with the customer service i got.

Is that a rarity? or do you think h.p is not a good brand? the laptop was almost a thousand dollars.. it was a very nice one.

I was wondering about dell? or toshiba? anyone had good luck?

or what brand would you recommend?

Thanks guys

Update:

wow.. thanks for all the answers.. but do remember now.. its coming out of a student loan, lol. so i really cannot afford a mac...

It really just depends on what features you want and how much you're willing to pay. I am a PC guy, but if you are working mostly with graphics/music/media, you might want to consider a Macbook pro.

As far as PC's are concerned, the best brands tend to be, in ascending order...Dell, Toshiba, HP, and Sony Vaio. Remember, the better the brand/features the more $$ you will pay.

You said you are a student. I just graduated college, and I had the Dell latitudes for all 4 yrs. They were fine, but definitely not without warranty returns/upgrades. If I had to do it over, and wanted an exceptional value/reliable machine, I'd personally recommend the

Sony Vaio W series notebooks. Here are the specs:

    cost: $499

    1 GB RAM

    160 GB HD

    1.66 Ghz Processor

    Built in Webcam

    2.6 pounds (very lightweight!)

    Bluetooth technology/Wi-fi

Just as cheap as a entry level Dell but next step up in reliability/class/style. I'd go for it!

You can also check out the similar HP G60t series, starting at $469.99

    Best of luck friend!

It depends on the size of the laptop. Consumer reports recommends for a 12-13in: MacBook, Toshiba Satellite, White MacBook, and the HP Pavilion. For 14-16in: MacBook Pro, Lenovo IdeaPad, and the Dell Studio XPS. Good luck with your search!

    Laptop value

Macbook (This is not windows, though you can put an extra effort and money ♥ to run windows in it)

    IBM Lenova (Excellent Product)

HP - (Excellent Product & Customer Service) - No other brand replaces your machine this fast like HP does but of course you got to be in warranty and they shouldn't be able to repair it. Try and get the new DV-3T

I am done using other brands.. and about your frustration, no company will talk to you if you are out of warranty. Try not to buy anything else

Apple... but if you can't afford a Mac or you just aren't a OS X person (yet) then I would go with HP or Dell.

If you are interested in a Mac but have questions I could probably convince you to buy one in about 10 minutes or less...

I would get a macbook. They may not be the most affordable thing on the market, but they're lightweight and easy to carry around a campus, and they work great!

maybe you got a virus because some viruses like worms and stuff they can wipe out important parts only,

and Dell laptops are great, my friend has one and its great, its really fast, it hasnt messed up at all, only because hes cousins and sister droped it but other then that its a great laptop

Mac's are very good laptops. They are very fast and they have good Graphics. They are quite expensive but it all pays off.
