What are the chances of the 2012 predictions actually coming true?

First off, I will say that I don't believe that 2012 will be any different of a year than any other one. I am asking about how people will react when the year finally comes around. With all of the media that this so called "prophecy" has gotten, don't you think that people will go to great lengths to try and stop it, since they "know" that it will happen?

Or, on the other hand, will people go to great lengths to make something happen in an attempt to fulfill the predictions?

    Almost none.

One of several Mayan calendars is the Long Count calendar, which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days or 7057.5 years. The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. This is not a prediction of the end of the world.

These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

"But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus' advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

Some very bright men have predicted that humans will be their own downfall through the improper use of technology such as nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Right now, in the Middle East, tons of depleted uranium is being pulverized and spread across the world by winds. The US continues to spread nuclear weapons and Israel has 22 warheads.

We also may experience a asteroid strike, or an event like a shift in the polar axis. Also, five times in the past 650 million years, there have been massive species extinctions due to global warming. The atmosphere turns into a sulfurous poisonous gas at very high temperatures.

I've seen extremely accurate published predictions about 9/11 and the stock market that have been very specific. It would not surprise me if many of these predictions are true. It's just impossible to put a probability to predicted events in 2012. On the other hand, there have been many incorrect predictions, especially about the turn of the last century.

Okay, the mayan calender said that the world is going to end in 2012, but historians have found out that due to miscalculations, the world was so called suppossed to end in 1995. The mayans also said that the world began in 100 B.C., so including that fact, the world should have ended already. Don't worry about it, the miscalculations were wrong, anything can happen tomorrow, today, who knows? Just chill out, the chances for anything to happen like that are possible, but very low.

Well I will be having a big night out on 20th December 2012 (just in case)

Seriously though - I think something will happen but nothing as drastic as an extinction - saying that extinction will happen some time whether it be in our lifetime or in another 30 million years its happened 5 times before but judging by the way we treat our planet it will be sooner rather than later

People who promote 2012 are doing so to sell books and advertising on their doomsday shows. After each "predicted" doomsday passes with nothing happening there is a new one invented. I have watched the 2012 Doomsday program on the History (Hysteria) Channel. The content isn’t about any real 2012 event happening and it isn’t about history. It is about selling books and selling advertising on the TV programs.

There is no scientific theory that anything unusual is going to happen in 2012. ZERO scientists believe that anything out of the ordinary will happen in 2012. It is all total CRAP. These people are interested in one thing - MONEY. And by listening to their programs and/or buying their books you provide them with - MONEY. The more MONEY they make the more twists and turns they invent to make it more interesting so you will listen to new TV programs so they can make even MORE MONEY.

If you had hogwash to sell wouldn’t you try and package it so looked like prime rib? That is just what these shysters are doing… selling to those who will listen – HOGWASH. Drink deep!!! They need MORE MONEY. They need YOUR MONEY.

By the way... 2012 isn't the first Doomsday prediction. Here is a link to other Doomsday predictions from the past and present… THERE HAVE BEEN THOUSANDS OF DOOMSDAY PREDICTIONS… and none have come true.

I suppose that would depend on the specific prophecies. when i was on maternity leave from work i used to stay up all hours of the night and watch random documentaries because that's all that was on and I watched one on 2012. It was interesting anyway... I can't say I buy that the world will end but seriously who knows. Wikipedia has a compilation on the year 2012 here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012 but that includes everything not just doomsday predictions, although i believe there is a link to doomsday predictions on there as well. Don't sweat it, only time will tell!

Source(s): Wikipedia and some documentary i watched at 3 am like 2 ys ago :)

These predictions are based on lies and distortions, so there is not the slightest chance of any coming true. It's hard to believe that so many people evidently believe such obvious nonsense and give thumbs down to people who know the truth. What will you believers in this crap do when 2013 comes without any of the dumb predictions coming true? One of my contacts is betting everyone $1000 that the end won't be in 2012. If you guys are so sure of your belief in this crap, bet against him. Put your money where your thumbs are.

I believe the chances are very, very little. The Rapture, Armageddon, End of the World, whatever you want to call it, has been predicted hundreds of times before, and they were all wrong.

Check out this site, some of it is actually pretty amusing:

A solar flare cycle will rise up at 2012 (wat a coincidence!)

It rises up every 11 years, but 2001 was fine.. we had internet & all that :S

Worse scenario: a couple satelites go out leaving the world without electronics for a couple months...

That would be a great break!!!
