Black Desktop and visible pointer?

I'm not too sure when this began.

When I turn on my computer it the desktop boots, but none of my icons or taskbar appear.

It's just a black or as it is now a greyish blue screen.

And the pointer is visible and functioning fine.

I've been told it's something to do with the booting.

Before this I had a habit of manually turning the computer off when it froze, but pressing on the power button or pulling the plug.

Also I used System Restore in order to help, my computer isn't freezing anymore.

But the desktop still goes black with the arrow

What gives?

I don't have the XP CD, just to get that out of the way.

Is there anything I can download or do?

Do I have to do this manually, such as take the computer apart?

I'm not very computer savvy.

You won't need to open your computer and mess with the hardware, this is strictly a software problem.

I think the easiest way to fix this is to find a Windows XP installation cd-rom, and to boot on the CD. In the first screen where it asks you 3 options, select "Enter" to install windows xp. Then, select the first partition (where Windows is installed), and you should have a Repair option. This will restore your windows to its original settings, but your personal files as well as your software will still be there. You might have to reinstall some drivers, but at least Windows will work.

If that fails, format and re-install Windows (or Linux!).
