Do you use baby on board signs properly?

I've noticed a lot of people have the sticker ones and I wonder what they do when baby is not in the car. The point of those signs is to alert emergency personnel that there is a baby in the car who can't get out on their own in the event of an accident, and they are supposed to be taken down if baby's not in the care so emt's don't spend time looking for a baby that's not there, but how many people actually do take them out?

Do you take down the baby/child on board signs if baby is not in the car?

Update:

I never heard the urban legend about the baby lost in the car, a bunch of the men in my family are firemen and that's where I heard it.

Actually the baby on board signs are like the "student driver" signs they are supposed to alert other drivers that you are a danger.

If emergency personnel see a car seat they are going to look for a baby, they aren't going to trust some stupid piece of cardboard.

They are not for that reason. Any paramedic could just see that their was a child seat in the back. Every site tat I have looked at so far says that they started in 1985 and are to warn other drivers around you to be cautious of your vehicle because it has a baby in it. Where are your articles to back your story up?

UPDATE: Your link is not for a "baby on board" sticker. Did you look through them?

Most people use them as sun screens or what if they have abumper sticker. You can just take a bumper sticker off and put it on randomly. These started out as warning signals but they have quickly evolved to decorations. EMT can tell if there is a baby on board by doing a quick search of the vehicle, which they are supposed to do anyway. If a baby is thrown from a car, then they would have to find it out if/when the driver lets them know, unfortunately.

wow well you learn something everyday! i never knew thats what they were for,i know a lot of ppl that have them for more of a accessory and they don't take them down when there kids arn't in the car,but i live in Britain so maybe it doesn't mean the same here?! i think its a really good idea though,if ppl do it correctly.i have kids but we don't have a car, il keep that in mind for when we do tho!

You know what I never knew that was the real reason for the sign. I thought it was to inform other drivers to be carefull around this vehicle because there is a baby in there. No I don't ever take mine off.

When I delieverd my son the hospital gave out alot of parenting forms which I am sure everyone gets especially new mothers. Anyway their was one on that subjusct and it is suggested NOT to advertise that you have a new baby with baby on board signs or on signs that people put in their yards and windows at home like with the stork. Predators look for these signs and this is how alot of baby abductions happen. People do steal babies to keep and sell. It is sick. They also say not to advertise in newspapers.

    EDIT:

    This is from YOUR link

The two main uses for the Safety tags are to adhere to the exterior window of a vehicle to alert other motorists or EMS that a child is present in the car. The other prominent use of the tag is to adhere it to the entry way window of a home or apartment to alert EMS personnel that a child(ren) reside in the home.

It is to alert EMS of babies in your HOME not CAR.

I don't have one of those but I do see them a lot, and to be honest w/u i never knew that is what is was for! I just thought it was a cute sign ppl put in there windows to let other drivers know. Omg I feel so dumb right now.

I've never heard of them being used for this purpose. I honestly think they are a bit pointless, myself. Is it really going to make others around you drive more carefully? No. You're the one that has to take extra precautions while driving.

    I just thought they were,

    A) A way for parents to brag about having a new baby or,

    B) A way to warn people behind you that you might be driving a little slower than 70MPH and they should stop honking at you and get off your bumper.
