washing machine repair?
I have an Amana washer Md# lwd70aw or plwd70aw yr.97. I know it's old but it has a stainless steel tub and would like to repair it, to replace it $$$$. My question is, how do you remove the agitator, it's one piece and there is nothing down inside the agitator that holds it. How do I get it out? What's the trick?
Lew c. heat never came into play. problem was that i already had the drums out, so i took your answer & put a portable heater in the drum, pop out it came. I'm trying to change the drum bearing. which way does the lock nut on the shaft turn off. lefty loosy or opposite?

The agitator will slide off the spine/shaft, but I doubt it comes easily.
I would suggest running a tub full of hot water, and letting it soak for a 15 or 20 minutes, then draining the water.
As soon as its drained, open the lid and reach in (UNPLUG WASHER FIRST!) and grab the narrow part of the agitator with both hands and pull upward. Resist the urge to put your fingers under that bottom flange (or flattened skirt area) of the agitator, as it could break off.
The agitator will come out, with much persistance, if you keep trying.

The old washers have a bolt under the cap that must be removed to remove the agitator, then grab hold of the agitator and lift up. The newer washer agitator, just pulls out, remove cap, if no bolt, just grab hold and lift up hard.
Hope this helps.
