Concerning cellphones in school, is this against the law?

Is it against the law for the deans of a school to walk into a classroom and demand that all the students hand over their cellphones because one kid's cellphone went off and the teacher could not figure out whose it was?

How can the deans take the phones if they don't even know the students are in possession of them? what if they go as far as bringing a female teacher into the room so that the girls cannot but their cell in their bra? isn't this an invasion of privacy?

Update:

what if the student handbook only says that electronic devices need to be turned off and not visible. can authority then be challenged since the other students' cells weren't visible?

That is not a matter of law, it would be a matter of school policy.

You have a lesser expectation of privacy in a school, so they are well within their rights to prohibit the use of anything that would distract learning.

It depends on the cell phone rule in the student handbook, At my school we have a "no electronic devices rule" and we signed a sheet agreeing that we will not bring them, and if we do the schools staff has full authority to take them away. and if you signed a student rule book agreement of any kind, then you probably have the same rule.

so, no it's not against the law.

It is perfectly legal for a school to ban cell phones, and demand that students hand them over.

Strip-searching a student for a cell phone without a valid reason would probably be illegal.

  • against the law? surly not!

against school policy? probably so ...

it is against the college rules to have cellular telephones in college. definite, they are able to take them at any time and discipline the scholars. you need to on no account convey your telephone to college.
