comments on 8 state lawmakers requesting drug testing on welfare receipts?

I for one think that this is the best idea that has come along in along time. Be public aide, money, food stamps, public housing, and even unemployment benefits to have random drug tests done.If you work at a job that says clearly that we do random drug testing and you fail, your out of a job. Some will feel that this is clearly a invasion of your privacy. But look at the benefits in taxpayers spending.I'm not speaking about everyone that receives benefits are drug users, I've seen first hand some that are, waiting for their tanif checks to buy a bag of whatever, trading food stamps for cash, rental payments as low as $2.00 or less. If you think I'm nuts for agreeing with this, by all means let me know

It needs to be done like yesterday. When they do this a lot of people are going to realize it should have been from the beginning. I knew a [person] in NC. that was in city housing and paid no rent got a check and food stamps every month. They were to pay utility's and buy food with this but instead they bought crack and beer. Then when they got a turn off notice for utility's they would run to the assistance office and get money to pay the bills.

Also the states need to tell the ACLU to piss off with trying to stop it from happening.

BOOOOOO to drug testing!!!!!!! You miss all the meth/cocaine/ heroin addicts, and get the person who hit a joint 2 weeks ago at a BBQ! Yeah I get a whopping $70 a month in food stamps. I also work 40 hrs a week and go to school part time so stay out of my damn business and go watch AIG and banks that are really draining Americans pockets. And if DHS won't pay for for DNA tests, that would make men accountable for dumping their responsibilities on women and therefore leaving mothers with no choice than to turn to welfare which drains the tax payers $$, then they DAMN sure can't pay for drug testing. Also, we're in a recession so that just sounds cruel to me to turn people away because of drug use?!? These people aren't going to all of a sudden be able to take care of their families just because they stop smoking weed etc..I don't think that's going to solve any problems. It'll never happen under Obamas' administration anyways...and this all seems like a "scapegoat the poor" mentality.

A pretty good idea. My Bro-in-law has a live-in G.F. They won't get married because if they do they loose her gov't benefits. They have three kids, and can't afford a reliable vehicle, but they can always find money for pot.

To me, this is just wrong on a lot of levels. It is not the way I grew up. I sure didn't work hard to get an "OKAY" job so I could see my tax money go for someone elses drug habit. I don't even have enough money to have a drug habit of my own!

This is not a good idea at all. Its just another way for the government to stick their nose where it doesn't belong. Its is a invasion of my privacy to check my bodily fluids. This is just another way for the government to forcefully inject themselves into peoples personal lives. Besides we are in a recession and doing something like this would just make things worse. Just because people are doing drugs doesn't mean they should be punished and not allowed any benefits they need help with their addiction.

Most drugs are out of your system within 3 days except one. And that is marijuana. So these drug tests would mainly catch marijuana users not real drug addicts. Its a waste of money and time. And money is something that cant be wasted in times like these.

only one problem with food stamps. you cant buy anything other than food with food stamps now. its on a card so unless you buy someones groceries for them you cant buy drugs. i dont do drugs but i think its a violation of human rights. besides you have to realize that their are alot of people suffering from drug addiction and mental disorders with no help from anyone. you dont know what its like until you live in poverty. you dont know what its like in a very poor black neighborhood. the police corruption, the worst school systems, the lack of jobs and very low paying jobs. where do you think these guns and drugs come from? the same government that gives you assistance. sure there are people who are taking advantage of these things but what your doing is singling out the poor. my parents had no choice but to get food stamps from loosing their jobs. they went from 100k a year to nothing. my mother is on 4 different drugs for blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes etc. those will conflict with drug testing. its not gonna work the way you think it will. tell me why dont they drug test AIG? or all these crooks that have stolen trillions from us? you realize the cost of this? to do accurate testing is not cheap. so do you want to pay for welfare and drug tests out of your tax dollars? what they need to do is stop the drugs from entering the U.S. they need to actually police the poversh areas instead of planting drugs on people and causing corruption. they need to give adequate mental help and drug treatment to people that need it. they need to have a school and job training program that is mandatory to receive any benefits. see this drug testing sound good on the surface but its not fixing the issue. people that haven't lived there dont know how the government gave up on these neighborhoods and allow these weapons and drugs there. if your education gets cut like it did in Chicago..literally closed many black schools, you have kids running around in the streets what do you think is gonna happen? this isn't oh all blacks are bad or all Mexicans are bad. the government created this problem and they come up with their version of the solution. they have made it very difficult for anyone that lives in those neighborhoods to make anything of themselves. ill give you an example of how much they actually care about a black neighborhood. i used to live on Hoyne and Washington in Chicago. the first week of hot weather we got 11 people were shot and killed. only 1 made the news. and that was a white boy from the suburbs there to buy heroin.but they didnt tell you he was there to buy heroin. yup some upper class kid buying heroin. its very common. so 10 black teenagers died and not 1 news paper or radio, tv nothing covered it. only the white kid. but he was a victim. he shouldnt of been there trying to buy drugs. but see they dont tell you that part. i agree with your concern but what im saying is this will do nothing to take care of the underline problem. lets stop giving assistance to illegals. how about that one? see its a big problem and one tiny thing will do nothing. besides you cant beat a drug test today.

I think it's a stellar idea. I think it should be taken further and that all public held offices should also be tested for substance abuse. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I totally agree with the concept. There has to be some accountability.

I think its a publicity stunt. I want them to produce evidence that this idea makes financial sense. Such a program would be VERY expensive to manage.
