How much do you normally tip grocery baggers at the commissary?

I'm trying to figure out what's the norm on a regular trip to the commissary?

I usually tip around five dollars unless I have a massive load. Then I'll go up to ten.

Jeffrey, you might not be aware of this, but baggers at the commissary DON'T get paid. If nobody tips them then they work for free.

It depends on how much I purchase, if under $100 then $2, if under $200 then $3, if over $200 it depends on how much but up to $5, although one day it was pouring and this really nice guy helped me out big time so I gave him $10 and had only spent $100. It also depends on their attitude, etc...

Commissary is a military grocery store that is for AD, Reservists and Retirees. Because things are sold at cost, they pay their regular workers through the surcharge (5.5%), baggers are the ones who work for tips only and that is what they get paid. So they are not breaking the law or going to get in trouble for taking a tip.

When I go and just pick up a couple things through the express lane and they are bagged, I tip $1.00. When I do my big bi-weekly shop and spend $200 or so and the groceries are taken to my car, I tip anywhree from $5.00 to $10 depending on how nice the bagger is and how well they bagged my groceries.

Bagging at the commissary was the first job I ever had. I was 13 and lived at Lakenheath. I worked my butt off. I would bag $300 worth of groceries, load it carefully and walk away with $1.00. So I do tip a little more because it is not as easy as it looks :0)

People seem to be conused..baggers at the commissary work for TIPS ONLY. They get no paycheck at all.

I just give them whatever seems reasonable, at least a dollar, up to five.

But I am a bachelor on ComRats so I am not buying groceries for a family. My chicken pot pies, cold cuts and Doritos usually don't add up to more than 40 bucks, and usually I go through express line.

And to reiterate, to those who aren't on a military base, baggers at commissaries do NOT earn a paycheck. Tips are their sole source of income. So tipping is more than a courtesy.

Not only that but normally they are children of servicemembers (though not always) so you are supporting military family members.

I dont have them bring my stuff out to my car...ever because most of them are old any way, but if they just bag my stuff I usually give them 3-4 dollars

    * This is assuming yall are talking about a commisary that has baggers that only work for tips and dont get paid by the hour...just to clear that up

between $2-$5 depending on how much there is.

Obviously there are people answering who aren't associated with the military and have never set foot in a commissary answering this.

Baggers aren't paid workers, they work for tips only.

We usually did about 3 or 4 dollars. Most of the time 4 dollars since they only get tips and not a hourly rate.
