I need tips for when I take my hamster traveling?

I am going to visit my grandparents for a week.

My little brother and sister are coming, too.

The only people at my house are my brother and my mom.

(My dad is out of town, on business)

Rodents gross my mom out.

My brother would just give it to our dog.

I have to take it along.

I have a plastic traveling case with holes ,

it is falling apart but i fixed it with tape.

Do you think this will work?

It will be very cold (South Dakota)

It is a 6 1/2-8 hour trip.

The car will be heated,

but when we go into rest stops and stuff

i'm afraid he might be too cold.

Would those fabric ones be better?

I have things for my hamster's stress level.

This is the first time i have taken him anywhere,

except home from the pet shop.

Basically, I just need to know everything about

traveling with a hamster when it is cold out,

or just traveling in general.

Update:

There is NOBODY to take care of her.

When me & my family travel, we always bring my hamster with us when there is no one at home to take care of him. i don't want to bring him to my friend or relative because i would just be worried about him. We already traveled 3 times, it is a long journey and the vehicle we are riding is an open car and there is too much wind but my hamster was still fine. i put him in his small cage, it's not a plastic container, it is a small cage with metal bars which is really for hamster, easy to carry because it is small and it has a handle and my hamster is comfortable in it. i also brought his 2 toys, his food and his water. And while we are traveling, Whenever i feel that it is cold that it might chill my hammie, i just get my hamster from his cage and put in my hand to warm him up then he just sleeps, he feels safe & comfortable. sometimes i also wrap him with a small baby towel, (he looks like a baby!) it really warms my hammie and he loves it when he is sleeping while we are traveling. So if you really need to bring him with you, just be sure you brought all the things that your hamster will be needing, some toys, his wheel, food, water, hamster's first aid kit for emergency use. and you can also bring a small baby towel. hope this helps... :-)

  • I wouldn't bring it with in the plastic container, Hamsters are REALLY smart, the hamster would probly get out. then it'd be like an episode of a sitcom, ya, you'd be in a predicament. I know cuz my hamster got out 3 times, and the last time he was out for 2 months, then we found him, and he had lost to much fur to not have gotten some type of an infection. so ya...don't take him. I'd say let a friend pet-sit the hamster. That's your safest bet. just keep him in his normal cage, and take it to the friend's house. so ya.....Hope this helps, and I hope you have fun on your trip!

unless you have to ... dont, when i brought my hamster to my grandparents house it kiled her, :[ not because she was sick it was because of the stress, ear poping, caring moving to fast for her to adjust quick enough, air temp changig to quickly, etc.

now this wnt happen to all hamster just the: sick, very young, and very old ones. and they aren;t gonna die right away, they will start to sleep more, cover them selves up, dig wholes and burry themselves, stopp eating there food, etc. it happens with in about a 1-2 day period.

but if u have a good, heathy hamster, just makke sure u have a wheele, for exercise, lots of cusing so he/she can be warm, and if i where u, dont put him/her in that suitcase thing, if u have to u can get a hoodie and put him/her in ur pocket, she'll most likely sleep, and she will be warm from ur bod heat, but she wont like ur suitcase.

Ask a friend or relative to take care of it while your gone because that is really not safe. The change of temperature and surroundings could kill it.
