Where did the term "tin foil hat" come from?

Shouldn't it be aluminum foil? Or is tin and aluminum the same substance. Does it matter? Who wears tin foil hats? And why?

The guy above me got it right. The tinfoil hats were supposed to block the alien influences. That was the movie where the aliens were making crop circles in Mel Gibson's corn field.

Because people actually used to make hats out of tin foil for what ever reason.
