What is the cultural significance of the nose piercing that many Indian women wear?

I've seen many women from India that wear a jewel in their nose. Does this have some sort of cultural or religious significance? What is its history?

Yes, it is a symbol of purity and loyalty to the husband. In some religions throughout India it signifies a blessing from their Gods and most of them don't leave the house without it. Most like the red dot between the eyebrows that signifies unity and the third eye.

uhh no they just wear it when they get married

    There is no other reason...

It doesn't signify anything else! For those who answered something about purity and the "red dot" you are wrong!
