how do i get my computer to detect my camcorder?

i've tried running the program that came with the camcorder and also windows movie maker but they aren't coming up with anything.

    Which camcorder?

    MiniDV and Digital8 tape requires firewire.

    Flash memory and hard disc drive requires USB.

    DVD camcorders require you to rip the video using the drawer loading DVD drive in your computer.
