Have you ever had a deep or powerful convincing experience..?

... spiritual or otherwise, that seemed overwhelmingly true and unquestionable at the time, but that proved false, or at least markedly misunderstood or misinterpreted, in the light of later information or experience?

Or the reverse: found such experiences always utterly reliable?

I'll not skew this more by adding anything else at present.

Update:

Interesting Logjam 600.

I've had an at least 8, in terms of power and conviction, and a couple of 5 to 6's on your scale.

And, although I nearly didn't discover such, all of them have delivered false impressions, rather than the knowledge and truth they more than appeared to affirm.

But so far the consensus is against me, at least here.

Update 2:

Epistemological split? I can't rely on experiences because I've had "sure certain experiences", including within Christianity, break on me. Prove false.

But a firm personal experience cannot be argued against from the outside. Or, really, communicated, if it hasn't happened to the other person.

If someone has existentially touched the void and "knows" there is no God... He and the born-again person who has experienced the Spirit have nothing to say to each other.

But they can't both be right, and each will be convinced the other has had a false or mis-interpreted experience.

Yes, on both counts, though I'd go soft on the "overwhelming"; I think, if religious experiences could be put on a scale of 1-10, most of them would be 2-3; seldom does anyone get a "10", such as seeing God face to face, though that does happen. Rather, God wants us to add up a bunch of 2's and 3's as it were, so, at the end of our lives, we have the equivalent of a "10". In other words, better to have daily, or frequent 1's and 2's, and be steadily adding to your spiritual experiences and wisdom. Also, His opposite must have his shots at us, so we learn to choose between good and evil, light and dark.

About 10 ago years I became overwhelmingly convinced that Calvinism was the only proper way to interpret the Bible. This lasted nearly a year until God brought be out of the cult.

I was so convinced that it was right, yet the inconsistencies were glaring me in the face the whole time, and I just couldn't/wouldn't see them.

The most difficult struggle for me was the decision whether to save face and maintain my position out of pride, or whether to give it all up for what I knew was the truth. Thank God that his authentic grace came through by allowing me away from Calvinism and into Biblical truth. The fact that I could be caught up in such a doctrinal heresy and be so convinced of its voracity still frightens me and keeps my vigilance very high.

I had a deep, powerful convincing experience called being born again; and contrary to proving false, it is proving to be more and more clearly the truth the more I delve into it and test it, and examine it and embrace it and walk in the light of it.

I know that I know that I know that Jesus is the Son of God, crucified for sinners, raised from the dead and that one day He will raise me from the dead, or transform my mortal body into an immortal body in the rapture; and so shall I ever be with the Lord.

    38 years and counting!!
