What happened to all the good metal music?

Update:

Not going to lie, I've never heard of any of those bands. Listened to some samples of all of them just now, Mastodon and Gojira sound pretty interesting. Maybe it wasn't metal I was talking about? My tastes in this genre run along the likes of Anthrax, COC, Down, Fear Factory, Live, Mudvayne(not the new album), NIN, Pantera, Tool.......

Good Metal still exist, it's just overshadowed by mainstream bands and mis-genred bands

I just love questions like this. It's not "Hidden" or anything by other bands, its just that mainstream bands, get.. well, the popularity.

You have to look for those other non-famous good bands out there, even if it means going back a decade or two. This does not mean it's left in the 80s or 90s, I'm just saying it's still there. There are also great new bands but they obviously don't get famous like metallica and slipknot.

Unfortunately, as far as major labels and the radio go, if you're looking for decent metal, there's not a whole lot for you there anymore. As far as newer bands go, it's all on smaller labels (with the exception of Mastodon, who are both not bad at all and on Warner Bros. Records because they got insanely popular). Depending on your tastes, check out what Holy Mountain, Kemado (both mostly stoner metal), Southern Lord (lots of black metal and drone stuff), and Sensory (prog, mostly) have been putting out lately. A lot of it is actually pretty cool.

And, of course, older independent labels like Century and Relapse still put out good records every now and then. They can be a little spotty (especially Century) lately, but both labels are worth keeping an eye on.

I've really been digging the newest Mammatus record, and the new Wolves in the Throne Room in particular lately. Also, if you can catch The Sword live, I highly recommend you do so.

What you won't find on these labels: haircore and nu-metal, because neither of those styles are metal and neither of them have produced anything whatsoever worth listening to. And for all their posturing as some kind of "anti-pop" music, that's exactly what they are: pop music. The bros at the frat house think Slipknot is sick too, brah.

    Edit:

Well, metal's a big genre, and if that's the stuff you're looking for, check out... oh... the new Outlaw Order album. You might dig it. One of the dudes from their old band, Eyehategod is playing in Down right now. It's sort of along the lines of a sludgier Pantera. You might also dig some of the stuff on Translation Loss. They tend to focus on really sludgy metal. Javelina and Zodiak might be a good bet. Javelina is sort of like COC and Zodiak sounds a little like Tool but with a little bit of Isis thrown in. Also check out Ufomammut. They're an Italian band that's been around for a while, and their newest album is pretty sweet. As for really new bands, give Samothrace a try. I write for a magazine (which shall remain nameless) and we got their album in for review and I was absolutely floored by it. Kind of sludgy, crusty doom stuff with some pretty sweet guitar solos (a rarity in a lot of modern doom).

Okay, shameless advertising aside, it's just not in the mainstream anymore, save a few Metal bands like Dream Theater. You must look deeper in the underground.

You won't find decent metal on the radio or on MTV or **** like that. You gotta look in the depths of the internet for good old metal.

    Gojira

    Mastodon

    Electric Wizard

    Cynic

    Arsis

It's been hidden by bands like Disturbed, Slipknot, and Mudvayne

Good metal is still alive, it's called Dream Theater, Mastodon (New album is epic), Between the Buried and Me, and Glass Casket
