if you go with one of those that 'reduce what you owe' then your screwed. basically uncle sam sees it as income if you get something and dont pay for it. so for example you buy a tv at best buy for $800 then you go to this program that reduces what you owe to best buy to $400, well you got a $800 tv so you have to report that difference on your taxes. also, when best buy sells that debt to whoever buys it for $400 (the company 'reducing your debt' acts as a broker) then there is nothing stopping the person who bought that debt from going after you for the remainer. (the other $400). so in the future whenever that debt changes hands a bunch of times you can finally have to pay. also, that person who bought your $800 debt and paid best buy $400 for it......they can come after you not only for the $400 but if you dont have that then your house, car etc. usually its thousands people are writing off so you cant just 'come up' with that. if anything you should go to a non-profit debt counslear one that only lowers your interst rates not 'lowers your debt' the lowering your debt people will do anything they can or say whatever to get you to sign up but its not a good idea. i suggest MMI money managment international. they charge $40 a month while you are paying off your bills but i have heard good things. there are also others out there that charge less or nothing at all but its your debt and you got the 'product' (what you bought) so you have to pay it or it will come back later to bite you in the butt. the only way to 'get out' of debt is backruptsy and you dont what to do that

    Deal with the bank direct.

Pay down your lowest debt first.

Then go for the highest interest debt.

Pay every minimum charge on time.

    Quit charging.

A lot of plans take your money and run. Leaving you poorer and in more trouble.

There are many non-profit agencies which can help you with your debt. Please don't pay a company to "help" you, they are just going to cost you more money.
