My speakers abruptly stopped working on my hp laptop: "No audio output device is installed"?
My laptop (only a year old) has built-in speakers and they were working fine until short time ago. Now, the volume icon in the lower right hand side of the screen shows that the computer is "muted"... and when I click on it as if I were going to adjust the volume up, the speech bubble pops up and let me know "No audio output device is installed."
Any ideas on why this happened or how to fix it?
Is there a possibility I can go online somewhere and download drivers for my speakers for free?

don't do a system restore, thats only a last resort, if you can't do this...
restart your PC > go to windows update > look for updates for audio (there should be a driver in there) > download it > restart your PC
If there is no update in there...
go to your PC's manufacturers website > search for audio drivers > download the latest audio driver > restart your PC
Then if you can't do that do a system restore (last resort!)

Try doing a System Restore back to an earlier Restore point when your speakers were working.
