Relationships between George V, Wilhelm II, and Nicholas II?
I know that George and Wilhelm were cousins, and that George and Nicholas were cousins, but I can't figure out who the common ancestor for all three was. Does anyone know?
It can't be Queen Victoria. Nicholas wasn't her grandson. His wife, Alexandra, was though.

That is a good question, and everyone is giving the wrong answer. Nicholas II was NOT descended from Victoria.
-------------
Victoria is often called the "grandmother of Europe", but "Christian IX, King of Denmark" is called the "father-in-law of Europe"
-------------
George and Nicholas shared Christian IX and Louise of Hesse as their common grandparents. George's mother was their oldest daughter, and Nicholas' mother was their second daughter.
-------------
George and Wilhelm shared Victoria and Albert as their common grandparents. Wilhelm's mother was their oldest daughter, and George's father was King Edward.
-------------
George was first cousins with both Wilhelm and Nicholas, but Wilhelm and Nicholas were NOT first cousins with each other.

In the present day Prince Philip and Elizabeth, The Queen are both 3rd cousins, because they are both descended from Victoria and Albert, but they are also 2nd cousins once removed since they are also both descended from Christian IX and Louise of Hesse.
==============
All three were descended from George II by 6 generations, which would make all three of them 4th cousins. Anyone descended from George I is in the line of succession to the British throne. Wilhelm was probably ranked in the 30's, while Nicholas was ranked lower than 500.

As you pointed out Kaiser Wilhelm was first cousins with the wife of Tsar Nicholas. So the family bond was still fairly strong.
Source(s): I noticed this History channel article calls Wilhelm and Nicholas first cousins. So it would be easy to get this confused. http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history.do?acti... - 6 years ago

George V and Wilhelm II both shared Queen Victoria as a grandmother; George's father was Edward VII (Victoria's son) and Wilhelm II was Princess Victoria's son (Queen Victoria's daughter who married the German Emperor).
George V and Nicholas II were cousins as well, but it was through George's mother that they were related; not his father. George's mother was Queen Alexandra (born a Danish Princess), her sister Maria married Nicholas the 2nd's father, Emperor Alexander.
So, George's father's sister was Wilhelm's mother and George's mother's sister was Nicholas's mother. So, one was a cousin through his father and the other through his mother.
Of course the Russian royals are gone but the Danish royals aren't; in fact there were two more marriages between the British family and the Danish: Prince George, the son of George V and the current Queen both married people from the Danish royal house.

George and Nicholas were first cousins. George and Wilhelm were first cousins. Willhelm was a first cousin by marriage to Nicholas who was married to a granddaughter of Victoria. Wilhelm was and George were grand sons of Victoria. Victoria was Nicholas' great-aunt by marriage - his mother, a Danish princess, was a sister of Edward Prince of Wales wife. Wilhelm and Nicholas were distant cousins by intermarriage between German and Russian royal families.

Good question.
My best guess is George II of the Hanovers...he had two wives...First one gave us the Windsors, the second royalty all over Europe.
But that goes way back to the 1600's.
Maybe "cousin" is used loosely?
EDIT: I stand corrected. Of course that makes sense! I totally forgot about Queen Victoria.

They are all first cousins...grandchildren of Queen Victoria.
Really not that complicated...that relationship exists (same level) between most of that generation of European royalty. They were almost ALL grandchildren of Victoria!

Queen Victoria.
The three were cousins.
