John of Gaunt.  A fascinating and complicated figure who could have tried to seize the throne from his nephew, Richard II, but didn't.  And yet, as Anya Seton wrote in her novel about his third wife, Katherine Swynford, he and Katherine fulfilled the Shakespearean (in "Macbeth") prophecy: "Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none." His direct descendant was Henry VII Tudor, and thus he was also the ancestor of the Stuart, Hanoverian, and Windsor lines.

And Shakespeare also gave Gaunt one of his plays' greatest speeches, in "Richard II". There was good reason for that.

Living?  I think Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is fabulous.  She is my favourite of ALL royals.  She's no-drama, she's down to earth.  I think she will make a great queen for Sweden some day.

Dead: Horemheb. He was either the last pharaoh of the 18th dynasty or first of the 19th. Fascinating career as a general and royal scribe before sorting out the Akhenaten fiasco.

    Living: HM, of course!

All of them, least liked are Kaiser Wilhelm, Vlad the Impaler, Ivan the Terrible and Princess Anne, in that order.

Without a shadow of doubt it is, the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, who is far and away the most charming, caring, friendly, funny, smart, pretty and savvy of all the Royals. At 70 she still carries out the most charity work and duties for the Queen and shows no signs of easing up on her schedule. She is the jewell in the crown. and is still a very beautiful and attractive woman
